Default Melanistic Coyote?

Back Story: For about 15-20 years we have been able to catch glimpses of black coyote looking critters with the other coyotes. Back then there was a hybrid wolf breeder who had a large black wolf he let run loose all the time, we would see him too, way back then.

The last two years I have had 2 dark chocolate color coyotes with red hair tips, like the tips are sun bleached, come in about once every 2 months.

I finally got a picture of the black one. He has lighter shades behind shoulder and at the tips of the long air on tail and back legs. He sure is pretty whatever he is. Some Say CoyDog, my research says that is rare, but a true melanistic coyote is rare too. Almost all coyotes now have some degree of wolf way back when.

Thought you would enjoy the pics. One is if his hunting partner too.

Kelly

I killed that one when snow was on the ground several years ago. He looked a lot darker alive too. There used to be a few of them east of where I live, I saw some on various occasions several years apart, too many years to have been the same one. I found one on the side of the road dead, and it was as black as any lab, but definitely a coyote.

Sorry, that is about as colorful as it gets right now in Crandall. We have no green winter grass yet. This was full color after our light dusting of snow a few days ago.

Sounds like you better hurry and get him to the taxidermist before that happens and he moves away.

I'd love to get a black coyote. I'd take that over any deer, any day of the week.

This, I don't think they're extremely rare. I've seen 2. One in East Texas, and one in ks.

Definitely a coyote. I saw one in Edwards county a few years back. Would have thought it was a dog too at first but it was hanging with a normal color phase coyote.
I think when one of these breeds with a mountain lion we get black panthers but Iím no biologist.

I have seen a lot around here at home. This one could be mixed with domestic dog and was roughly 4 miles from our place. My Dad watched 6 black coyotes at one time on top of a hay bail at our farm.

I never have seen a black one hunting South Texas, West Texas or the Panhandle and the western states. I do get quite a few reports from East Texas, LA and MS of the dark to black color phases. Where were these photos taken?
