At that age I would get something he could grow into. 270 30 06 with reduced recoil.
Mine are 7 boy 10 girl and I'm leaning towards something in 6.5 Grendel

Out of those, 243. I had a 7mm-08 and that thing kicked like a mule, so definitely not a perfect kids gun in my book

I started with a 22-250

.270 reduced recoil. Make sure it fits ( scope is far enough back)
Federal fusion reduced recoil is just as advertised.
About .243 recoil with 115 grain bullet.
Lifetime gun.

I bought my oldest a 308. Remington tactical. It’s a short heavy barrel, relatively easy to move around in the blind.

With the 125 grain reduced recoil loads it kicks the same or less as a 100 grain 243. I bough an old stock, cut it down and I fit him well. Just r gently I put the original stock back on and and bumping him up on bigger loads.

I bought one of the Weatherby Vanguard's in 7mm-08. I have been impressed with the rifle (especially for the price). The trigger leaves a little to be desired, but overall it has been lights out. My kids and their friends have taken several animals with it. Oh, and my kids were around 8 or so when they started using it.

I think the 300 BO will do just fine. Use it in the AR platform with adjustable stock. Semi auto, good stock fit and the kid would barely know he touched off a round.

My son is 11 and has been shooting a 7mm08 for a few years. He shoots light recoil loads. Hornady Custom Lite loads. 120gr bullet.

My advice is to avoid short barrels. Increased muzzle blast is not worth it.
Shorten the stock as mentioned above, but on a full sized gun and barrel.
