Default Fishing in Destin

Iím headed on a family vacation starting tomorrow morning and we were originally going to book with a guide, but I changed my mind. I used it as an excuse to buy a new rod to travel with and of course a new reel to go with it haha. My question is has anyone had luck wading the surf there or do you know of a spot to try in or around Destin? When I was done last year, I waded the surf and was able to get on a few dink trout, but that was about it.

In may we waded bay side off of okaloosa island. We fished with gulp shrimp on a jig head. Caught a ton of lady fish and blue runners. Fun to catch but not to eat. We caught a few Spanish mackerel and a pompano. No trout or reds. So Iím not much help if youíre only targeting those species.

And do yourself a favor and rent a pontoon for a day, that was a blast. We took it back with fish blood all in it... lol good luck! Report back if you donít mind.

I've haven't caught anything in the surf besides ladyfish. Maybe a Spanish mackerel if you get lucky. Surprised you were able to catch trout, had trouble catching them in the bay. Their surf is fairly lifeless compared to Texas. If you got a kayak take it, you can get on some pretty good fish not far off the beach front.

Last year I fished with Nick at Navarre kayak. He took my wife and I on an inshore trip using Predator pedal yaks. Great yaks and Nick was a great guide.

He will also just rent you the kayaks. They drop them off to you and pick them up.

I fished the surf in front of my condo and caught 1 pompano and a dozen lady fish.

I wade fished in Gulf Shores two weeks ago. Caught a couple
of Spanish Mackerals. Lots of casts. Try a floating minnow bait.

They fell for a topwater right at sunup. Didnít know it was a rarity in the Florida surf. Looking into renting yaks.

i catch reds and trout every year in gulf shores in the surf. last year i went during a full moon and couldnt get out as far as i like too. we planned for a waning this year so hopefully the tide will be lower. the key where we stay is getting to that second sand bar. rattle traps and mirror lures early in the morning and late in the evening. the kids catch all kinds of stuff i dont have a name for in the bay on shrimp.

We have done really well on the Destin Jetties. We usually catch HUGE redfish. I'm not real familiar with saltwater fish names, but I think one fish we were catching was mackerel. We also caught a bunch of other fun fish including tons of lady fish. There are barracuda around. I have seen several big sharks caught there too.

Man I don't blame you. If you can drive about an hour east to Mexico beach there is some pretty good wading areas there that is good for trout and reds.

Thatís what I was thinking, should be able to get them to bite on a topwater, mirror lure or soft dine at the second bar . I only brought the essentials

If you fancy a drive of about 30 minutes over to Panama City, St. Andrews State Park (lagoon side and fishing pier) have good results. You could also fish into the bay pass off the jetty and you'll fill up on bluefish and spanish (probably).

Depending on the day, you can have a blast in the surf about the last hour of sunlight just throwing a white swim bait or using cut up squid. I have found it best when the water is a little less than the typical clarity. A little choppy is better too. All kinds of stuff will hit that swim bait and you can usually catch whiting one after another on squid, really close into shore.

As mentioned, the Jetties can be a really fun. Fish evening or early morning. Waste of time during the day. All kinds of stuff will hit top water or got-cha plugs (gold with orange head).

My kids prefer the gotcha plugs because the really big gaff-top catfish come up and hammer those. They fight unbelievably hard for their size. They're nasty so we use pliers to shake them off the hook. Also, their fins hurt about ten times more than a fresh water cat. A bad ***** can ruin an entire fishing outing.

i don't know if it's black snapper season or not, but if so it's worth catching them on live shrimp on the jetties.

Biggest piece of advice.... go to half-hitch tackle shop. They are super knowledgeable.

I had the exact opposite experience at half hitch. Fella behind the counter told me and a buddy "get a guide" when we asked what people were catching. Just trying to get a little local incite. Most definitely won't catch me in there again.

Have fun!

Where do you fly into? I flew out of the Tallahassee airport, hair care & tire center 2 weeks ago and flew close enough I could see Destin beach. I’m hauling camper in 2 weeks. If fly wife and kids if I didn’t have to go far to get them

Well that's not good at all. We've been going there over 20 years, usually 2 - 3 times and have had nothing but good experiences. I wouldn't say they're the most friendly and outgoing folks, but they have always been very helpful.

No fishing so far, but hoping to hit it this evening. Did some snorkeling for a few hours and found a bunch of sand dollars, then hit the pool for a bit.

Be careful with those sand dollars. We always used to get a bunch of them... then the game warder hammered the people sitting next to us last year with fines. He warned all of us that they cannot be taken from the water, period. He said they are focusing heavily on stopping that now.

Just pulled up a map and looked for a public. Place that looked like it has so depth changes. Only had about a half hour before this conference started. Going to try and find something with the family tonight.

Thank you sir. We're going to be there next week and may give that place a shot. Our kids want to do some bass fishing too. We've had some luck with that in the past in a couple of areas.
