I hunt in the far NE corner where Val verde meets Edwards and Sutton. Got a good 10 and some does with my bow and an axis doe with my rifle. Going out for turkeys next month. Check out the Sonora thread, lots of good posts and info there for guys in the area.

Saw a big 8 last year and we have a big 14 walking around at the end of the season. Hopefully he will hang around for this coming year and can meet the 7mm

One of my good buddies hunts on the Brewer ranch. He's killed some real nice deer. I hunted Val Verde county not to long ago and every year for 5 years I shot 140s class deer. I miss that spot.

Default Between Sheffield and Pumpville here...

we had a pretty good year. Several respectable bucks killed and let a lot of good ones walk. Headed back out the first weekend of March to feed, look for sheds, and kill a few pigs and/or sheep.

Killed two mouflon, missed three more including one awesome ram. Killed one BB. Didn't even try for whitetail.

Killed other stuff in other counties/states like axis, turkey, and elk. Freezers are looking pretty full

I was there two weeks ago. It was starting to dry out a little. some of the bigger rock pools still had water in them, but it doesn't take long for that country to dry out. Filled the feeders about halfway cuz the store in Dryden didn't have enough corn. Nice people at that store. Saw several deer and a few bucks still had their antlers, but most had dropped them. Spent two days chasing a band of five huge rams. I missed at 250 yards the first day. Took me and the GF most of that afternoon to locate them again. They spotted us at about 600 yards and didn't waste any time getting the heck out of there. Never saw them again, but I know they won't go far. They like my corn!

I'm headed back at the end of the month. Stopping in Ozona to pick up corn this time and bring an alfalfa bale as well. I'll hunt those sheep as I'm filling feeders.

Just kinda depends on the location of the ranch and how much pressure its had. Are you close to Del Rio or what?

My lease is just 8 miles from Dryden. Terrell County. Had some good bucks on camera, just didn't see them when I hunted. Going towards the end of April and fill feeders check cameras and see what I might need to repair a RV that was given to me. Has roof leaks. Can't wait till 2017-18 season. I got on late last year and didn't have much time to get ready before the season started.

My company's deer lease is 21 miles northwest of Comstock on west side of 1024. We have been there over 20 years with same rancher. We had another good year.

We feed protein and our bucks are getting more mass on their antlers and weight since we started. Our best buck was a B&C gross 164 taken in 2012.

We are lucky in that all sections of our ranch have water troughs and / or windmills with wells. The genetics are there but drought years are tough on horn development.

Only one turkey roost on the whole ranch which is nearly 40 square miles so we don't hunt them.

Should also mention we had zero feral hogs and few coyotes until about 3 years ago. Now they're becoming too plentiful. Don't know what caused the proliferation.

I'm headed out this Friday morning. Putting the dog in the Hilton, picking up an alfalfa bale and molasses bucket at Double LL in Ingram then headed to Ozona for corn and a burger. I hope to make the lease by 2 PM, fill a few feeders and then hunt for the rams I shot at last time. This week is going to be slow.

Any one ever tried alfalfa out west? The molasses buckets with peanuts all over them work pretty good. At least as long as its only deer on them. Lasted two months on deer. The sheep found the next one and it was gone in about 2 weeks.

I would recommend putting alfalfa. Just buy the square bale and put it out. Don't undo it. Leave in a square

For a long time, we stopped a DQ. That has changed to Sonic. On the way out I'm usually hot to get there so I'll buy groceries and corn in Ozona so I don't have to haul it that far, gas up, grab a burger at Sonic and keep on trucking. The Hitchin' Post Steak House has pretty good burgers if you have time.

On the return trip,I usually stop at the Mexican food restaurant on IH-10 near the west end of town. Can't remember the name.

I planned on leaving it bundled. The other lease members have tried it before and said the deer wouldn't hardly eat it. I ain't too worried about the deer, I'm looking to smoke pole a ram or two.

Put the bale out and pour corn all around it and on it. That will get the deer started on it. The only thing I ask is for a reply on how good it worked. Good hunting to all.

Counrty is green as spring is in full bloom but we have not really had any substantial rains. Hope that April makes for a wet and rainy month because it's starting to get pretty hot in the late afternoons. I saw three of the volunteer fire trucks rolling west towards Comstock with lights flashing. I hope it's not a serious brush fire. I will report tomorrow if I hear anything relevant.

SabreKiller are you seeing aoudad out there??

Default No aoudad yet....

but the neighbors have seen them in the past. The sheep I'm seeing are more of a mouflon or corsican and they can have a variety of color phases. It's almost like they bred with domestic sheep at one time. The herd I shot at a couple weeks ago had 5 rams, all colored like mouflon and three were well over full curl. They turned to run just as I touched of the old .270 and I missed.

This is the last one I killed. The other group of 5 had dark faces.
