    Army question, please advise

I have no military experience. My son is in process with recruiter and his Girlfriend already went to MEPS and was sworn in at San Antonio and pose to go to boot camp 1/31 for drone repair for her MOS.
So does this swear in at MEPS mean you are locked into service? Even if you lied about having plates in mouth? I am curious to know the possibilities here. I am only getting part of the story I think on this. This girl is trouble IMO, I like her but its bad timing for both I think.
Now for my Son, he is riding a curvy road of a young man with no real direction and has a desire for LEO work in and out Service.. As a young man.. as in jr high age, he was Marine Core all the way. Visits with recruiters has him leaning towards Army for possible jobs after military offering guarantee priority interviews with SAPD, OKCD and a few others
Now from my experience 25-28 yrs ago, the military guys had favorable chances over the college or guys that challenged the test, like myself to get hired by local and big city PD's
My sons recruiter is back from Vacation tomorrow and we will be hammering him for test results. In theory my son should be at MEPS 12/20 and signing up 12/21 as I understand it.
So basic question. Can G/F bail after signing up after MEPS and was assigned MOS of Drone repair.
Any last minute advice for my Son of 20 years old. PER advice from previous posts, I am trying to make sure he is all in for recruitmentment. His strong points are diesel mechanics, building and **** good shot and his strong desire to sign up.

Recruiters will tell you things that may or may not come to pass when you sign up.

For me, I took my physical, took my oath and shipped out. However if you do or don't have a medical issue they will get it figured out at some point and not being honest on your enlistment papers can land you in some hot water.

When I enlisted you made two trips to MEPS. First one was for testing, finger printing, physical, interviews, etc... Then you get your test scores back and do the rest of the paper work with your recruiter. You go back to MEPS, swear in, and leave for Boot camp the same day.

At meps before swear in they do a very thorough physical to include a full 3D X-ray scan for dental. There is no way they don't know about the metal plates in her mouth, they probably just don't care. As far as being locked in, they will tell you that you are but in reality your not until you have completed basic training. In my time, I watched a bunch of guys go awol. The ones who did so before basic was complete just got written off. The ones who bailed after the 9 week mark all ended up arrested and escorted back. This was in 2000 in the Army, infantry - basic and AIT all together. It gets softer every year that goes by so by now a recruit can probably just say I wanna go home and they'd let them lol

I'm a dentist and I've never heard of plates in the mouth?
What is this in regards to?
Was there a trauma that require surgery with fixation?
If so I've never seen this as something that can affect a physical clearance.
I would say it would have to go more with what the trauma was in the first place.

In the end with the girl, it'll probably just wash out where if she has any issues with her mouth, she'll have a pretty difficult time getting disability as it'll be a pre-existing condition.

As for getting out, we had a few throughout the basic training cycle that were released for one reason or another. So despite the swear-in, she'll probably be able to get out if her situation warrants it.

Ok, still clear as mud for the most part for me. We can 86x her and concentrate on him. Hope fully I will have more to up date with tomorrow as the recruiter is back from vacation

Until she leaves to head to basic she can still bail unless they changed it since I've been out.

When I was working through the hiring process with several LE agencies recently, around 3/4 guys were vets. Nowadays, you have to do more to stand out than just having a DD-214.

Surprisingly, a lot of the guys getting hired were not vets...go figure. Laterals and certified candidates were getting picked up before anybody else and filling almost all the slots.

                  Just a heads up!

If he truly wants to be a LEO, go another route and as direct as possible. Don't waste time if he doesn't have to.

                  JMO though.

If he's after adventure I hear the Dallas PD is hiring anyone that can figure out how to get the front door open. They're enticing them with guaranteed graveyard shift in S Oak Cliff for the first 15 years. Since their pension is now insolvent they get to do this knowing there's slim no chance of ever retiring. I'm sure there an abundance other great perks that I'm not aware of!

I don't know about the girl, but the recruiter cannot guarantee anything in the civilian sector.

                        re basic training

                        Just offering the info also:
When we had the kids sign up at Meps, they swore in to promise that they would show up for shipping out, provided that their urine tests were clean, no police involvement since initial singing up day.
If his or her physical is clean, no issues,
and no other law enforcement pending, warrants, tickets, probation,
and the drug screens are good, they swear in again and ship out on that date.
Yes, the DD214 helps to a degree, for Federal jobs , we are supposed to get hiring preference, either 5 or 10 points if you end up with a disability.
No other guarantees, but if they needs growing up, The military will do it,
and they can take that college money to figure out what degree they want and how to carry on afterwards!!
I still think its a great way to start, learn about life, and get some college money. and see the world, ( you might see some parts that you never want to see again, But that's life. ) I only did 22.5 years. I miss the service now.

True Dallas is hiring like crazy, because half of their officers are bailing to come work for Ft. Worth who is also hiring like crazy right now.

To answer the OP's question, yes she's sworn in and is technically accruing time in service. However, she can still basically just refuse to ship out and there's not much they can do.

An honorable discharge from any branch of service is viewed as a big plus by any police departmentioned that I'm aware of. Many departments give bonus points on their civil service exam. When LE jobs are as competitive as they are, those bonus points can go a long way to actually getting you into an interview room where you can then distinguish yourself from other applicants. I know at Ft. Worth PD, they will interview the top 200 scores on the civil service test. If 800-1,000 folks show up, 5 bonus points for military makes a HUGE difference. When I tested 12 years ago, I made a 98 on the civil service test. With the lottery number I had drawn, that put me at number 113 on the list. At our department, lottery numbers are drawn prior to the test and are used as a tie breaker for folks that score equally on the test. So, if 20 people score a 98, the person with the lowest number will be the 1st person behind the people with a 99. The 2ND lowest lottery number would be behind that person and so on. With my 5 bonus points, my score went to a 103, which moved me to number 10 on the list. If I had to guess, there were about 1,000 people that tested that day. So, you can see how much those points can mean. Now, it doesn't get you the job by any means, but it can get you moved up when it comes to getting an interview.

Sapd likes former military when they are hiring, but sapd is one of the hardest departments to get into in the country. Dallas is hiring people like crazy but it's Dallas and he'll be working overnight in the worst parts of town. Anything federal requires a degree at this point so if he needs help with college funds tell him to do a 3 year contract and then go to school. As far as the getting out of the military process after swearing in I couldn't help you there. You could also have him go to the Alamo colleges get an associates degree in criminal justice and get a feel for school and then he can go to utsa and join the sapd program they offer I just had a friend finish it and she's on the last round of testing for sapd really helps people get ready for it and if he has a bachelors sapd will love it

She can be kicked out for fraudulent enlistment for lying. This usually results in an other than honorable discharge. She will have one last chance to tell the truth when she returns to MEPS on ship out day. They will either seek a medical waiver or send her home. I'm thinking there is more to her story that she is not telling.

Your son might do well with a 4 year tour in the Army. It gives many of our kids a sense of direction and clarity. The military is not an easy life and is not for everyone but it does have its benefits. The biggest one being the post 911 GI Bill.

Keep in mind recruiters are professional salesmen for the service. At the end of the day their job is to get people signed up. They want solders first and they don't really care much about the MOS. That is secondary. They are experts at listening for clues and promoting what they hear that motivates a candidate (your son) to join.

I've been in the Air Force for 26 years and love the military. Bottom line with your son is he needs to know that being a GI is about service to country first and his personal desires will almost always come second. He will learn valuable life skills and will leave the service a better man if he keeps an open mind.
