Default Jail Time for Poacher

Anyone else see this:

DALLAS, Texas (KEYE) -- A judge in Grayson County, north of Dallas, has sentenced a man caught poaching a deer to spend weekends during deer hunting season in jail.

Texas Parks and Wildlife says 34-year-old John Walker Drinnon of Whitesboro was convicted of poaching a 19-point white-tailed buck with a rifle in an archery-only county on private property, which is a state jail felony.

The judge ordered Drinnon on spend every weekend of hunting season in jail for the next five years.

Drinnon also received 5 years of probation and must pay over $18,000 in civil restitution.

The judge also prohibited Drinnon from purchasing a hunting license while on probation.

Could not be happier. States really need to take a hard line on poaching.

Ouch! He got popped hard. Serves him right though. There is no excuse for doing what he did and he knew it. How these poachers think they are gonna get away with it boggles my mind. Bet he won't do that again.

Somewhat creative sentencing in making the punishments hurt and fit the crime, while still allowing the fellow to make a living ... to pay off the massive restitution amount.

Amazing how these idiots go and post this stuff on social media. If you're dumb enough to shoot a 200" deer off the side of a public road with a pistol at night though I guess you dumbness knows no bounds...

I'm glad to see he got jail time, but I don't think it matters a rat's arse to the poacher that he'll be confined during hunting season.

well, just weekends during hunting season over 5 years is less than 365 days soooo........ Not sure there are any legal grounds to object to this.

I might get flamed for this, but that jail time seems a bit much to me. I do think they should have their guns & hunting privledges taken for a long time, possibly longer than the 5 years.

thats bull**** he got a summons and didn't have to at least get a mugshot and his prints taken. If there is enough probable cause to file the charge, then issue a warrant and make an arrest. Seems like this guy might have a sympathetic judicial figure in his corner.

I am referring to the 271 deer.

Wow. I can understand some jail time, but to drag it out over 5 years and make him report to jail 20 different times seems a little excessive. There's predators preying on people that get off easier than that.

The normal leniency in our criminal justice system regarding punishments is a major contributing factor to our increasing crime and repeat offenders.

At least we know he won't be poaching on the weekends during hunting season. I don't care if he had to check in 40 times, he should have thought of that BEFORE poaching the deer.

He hasn't been arraigned yet which means he hasn't been formally charged yet, I don't think he can plea out to anything yet but I have minimal knowledge of how these things works. I've never been on the other side of the bars.
