    Trout Fishing

Going to broken bow in a few weeks and I will like to do some trout fishing with my wife and little girls. Only problem is that I have no idea how to fish for trout. Fly fishing is not an option for wife and kids so we will be using regular poles. We will be fishing south of the dam.

Any info on how to fish them and what kind of equipment/bait to use would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

Get with the folks that run the fly shop in the park. they will set u up with what you need. They are good friendly people. They are your only option now that linda and jesse shut down three rivers fly shop. They have guides if interested also.

They can see a #30 hook. Find a #30 or larger #26 hook for an idea. With that in mind use #7 tippet in fluorocarbon. You will have few bites on an 8 pound monofilament. Try at least 6 feet of leader with the fluorocarbon tippet. A regular rod can be used with a heavy cork / bobber to cast and sling a small fly. Not as effective as using a fly line for the presentation but it will work. Small jigs will work using the same technique. Calm water requires a small line, if there is current you can get away with heavier line.

Blue and chrome Rooster-tail or small piece of worm or cricket with split shot. Fish just left of main current coming out. Throw into current and let it drift around further to the left and hold on.

Go to the bridge where the fly shop is located. Throw a weighted hook (split shot) with a pink or orange power bait ball on it. Use a small hook. Be ready for a fun day! We try and go every year Free Fish Wknd in June. Limit out every trip! Lots of fun for the kiddos. The new bridge there is fun to fish from but before it was just a road. The spill current was a trout honey hole. It is somewhat blocked now but trout are still all in there.

Caught a 6LB Rainbow a couple years ago. Majority of the others are 12". Great eating!!!

          Good luck

High pressure areas the fish have seen everything thrown, few people go small so the fish will key in on smaller flies. Usually #20 and smaller.

When we go this is our go to when not fly fishing. We use the power bait balls. Sunrise color, it works great. Use a 1/4oz slip sinker then a barrel swivel. Off the barrel swivel use 2-4lb line about 16'' long with a #10 or 12 size hook. Works great and always catch them.

Use light line (4 or 6 lb) and grab a couple of packs of those really small pre-tied gold hooks and some small swivels. Also grab a jar of salmon eggs for each person and a few colors of PowerBait. Use a smallish bobber about 3-5 feet up from the swivel (depending on water depth) and a very small split shot to help get a line down somewhere close to the bottom and fish in moving water. Try to let your bait play out naturally but be ready - Trout sometimes hit very lightly. It is a challenge sometimes because the swirling currents mask the strikes. Trout will be hot for a while then nada. Switching baits can sometimes get a new bite going. Small spinner baits (Rooster Tail, Super Duper, Mepps, etc.) sometimes work well too if you get tired of watching your bobber.

Please post any info on your trip. Been wanting to make this one for awhile, but heard the floods did a lot of damage last year

Box of earthworms, tiny hooks, little split shot and light line.
                    Good luck.
