Iíve got a bone to pick with a buck in Fort Boggy. He slipped right by me last year after almost running head first into my blind. Maybe Iíll get lucky and draw that place again.

Does anyone know if I donít put in this year ( got drawn for Colorado Elk ) will my points that I have accumulated go away or stay until I put in again next year? Or do I have to still put in to keep them?

Yeah but if I get lucky and get drawn I lose my points whether I go on the hunt or not. I have a lot of points stacked up too, lol. Itís not the money Iím worried about itís getting drawn and losing my points and not being able to go

I think heís worried if he applies, heíll get drawn. Possible on conflicting dates. On a side note. I just paid my $143 to the state for myself and hunting party. Theyíre making a fortune off these hunts.

Not so much conflicting dates but I will be using all of my vacation time and (hall passes, lol )for my elk hunt. I guess I could see if I could just enter one for each category that is just a weekend hunt where I wouldnít have to take off from work.

Oh I was confused. Yeah thatís a tough one. If youíve shot some nice whitetails and never killed a bull elk Iíd definitely sacrifice the points for a bull elk.

I'm pretty sure you can skip a year and not lose your points but I'd definitely double check. If you don't apply for two years you'll lose them. You could always enter for one hunt in each category with the lowest draw odds so you probably won't get drawn anyway.

If you do not apply you stay where you are with points. I do this every few years depending on what I have going. You only lose points once you are selected (if you go or not)

I agree. I was very disappointed when they made it possible to put in for every hunt in every category. Odds went down for sure! Itís always about the money. Pick and choose carefully. There are still some good places but also some that I wouldnít go for free.

Yup, overall a let down in what's available when you consider how many apply. Seems to be less and less opportunity each year. Plus many hunts with 10 or less draw chances reducing the odds for a standby hunt.

I'll check out the hunts after work today. I know its long odds but I will put in for some of the better hunts (ones I consider to be better anyway).

Last couple years I've put my kids in as well. They have yet to be drawn. I'm hoping that changes this year. I would love for them to be able to hunt different parts of the state. Would also be cool for them to get a shot at something we don't have on our lease like a javelina.

If they donít get drawn go to Chaparral for standby on the youth doe hunts. Usually 3 dates and I have yet to see them turn a kid away. They usually allow one javi to be taken. Been taking my son and then my nephews for last 10 years. Great place.

its a joke alright. the better places to hunt, that used to have 200-500 apply for 2-3 hunts on a given property, all have 2000-4500 people applying now for 1 hunt with 6-10 permits. but at $3 a pop, the state is sure making some $$$.

So who has the most loyalty points? Most of mine were accrued when they were called preference points. I have 27 for gun deer (either sex) going into this season.

I have 17 GDE going into this year but I don't know if these "loyalty points" really help. We were drawn for the Garner Exotic hunt with 4 points last year.

I've got 5 in a lot of the categories.

A few of the categories I only put in for from time to time so I've got a couple in some of those. For whatever reason some categories don't get me excited every year (like hogs) so I don't apply for them.

I have 22 in Pronghorn. Other categories range from 1 to 16. Only have 4 in Bighorn. They deleted all my previous points and made me start over at 0 for that one a few years ago. That sucked.

Yup, there's a fluff piece in the houston chon about how many more permits are available now but deer opportunities are way down from 10-15 years ago. What they are counting is dove permits and national forest antlerless permits being added to the tpwd system. Read it for a good laugh, its all smoke and mirrors https://www.houstonchronicle.com/spo...s-13040563.php

I have 3 exotic and gator points, 2 GDE, and 2 Nat. Refuge Deer and Exotic, Outside of alligator, I try to only apply to the 'more adventurous' hunts.

For fall i'll be in class half days tue/wed with a 12 hr clinical on Saturdays(drew a crappy clinical day) I can take off work other days but can't miss school. I'll see what I can apply for with those open dates. Won't be much but I'll apply for whatever I can if they're decent locations. If not I'll wait till next year. Scared to apply and get drawn and lose points on a hunt I can't go to.i did. Heck gator and I can apply for that. Itching for that I was drawn last year but cancelled due to Hurricane
Good luck everyone

Just finished applying in 21 hunts. Most points I have are 4 in archery deer, 3 in gun deer either sex, NR gun deer, and private lands either sex. I have 2s and 1s in others.

What do you guys think about limiting the youth hunts to 3 applications per category? I kind of like it since there is no cost to prevent folks putting in for everything. Hopefully more kids get to hunt.

It was pretty common for folks to apply for every hunt because it was free. Many hunts went unfilled for that reason and youth hunts typically donít allow standby. Hopefully it will be more equitable this way.

They should have a "points only" option for those only looking to build points and not hoping to hunt that year. Would help the draw odds some.

Just pick one hard to draw hunt in whatever category you want the points in. You only have to apply for one hunt to get the points for that category. I did that last year.

I did that a couple years ago and of course we were picked. It sucked to have all our points wiped out for a hunt we couldn't go on, but agree this is the only way to do it.

That's just bad luck. Most try forever and never pull a mule deer tag. To get it on the year you can't go id a huge let down. I was able to find dates I can go over winter break for almost all the categories. One of the only that won't work is pronghorn private or public but ive decided I'm still going to put in for it to get another point. I have another 35 years or so to keep applying for it. Hopefully when I have 40 points it will give me the edge I need lol

Texas has too many people and too little public land.
Huntable public land is going to disappear as population increases. State Parks are over run with bikers and hikers.

I'd like to see a system where private land owners are incentivized to open their land at certain times of the year to the public for fishing, hunting, and trapping. I'd like to see a significant property tax incentive or abatements given to those who allow managed public access to their land. I think that if the state offered these incentives and indemnified the property owner for the risk associated with this, then we would way more opportunities to hunt.
