Jeep CJ lift kit and clean-up

Seems like yesterday my oldest boy was born, but that was 2004.
    He’s a great kid.

And being more than half way to driving age, I want my old Jeep to be around for him. So, here we go.
We got this CJ new in 1985.
    I picked it out.

That picture is from about 2002, she doesn’t look nearly that good now.
    My Dad bought it.
I worked construction for a couple summers to pay my half.
I drove it a couple more years and gave it back to him. He hardly drove it. So, one Christmas I drove it back to Texas.

With boy #2 and #3 blessing our lives, plastic toy crap overtook my garage and the Jeep ended up sitting out in the driveway. I'm working on taking back my garage.

Rust has become a threat to her making it 7 more years until Jaxon is ready.

Last fall, I had a local off-road shop prep the inside and spray in a bed liner, it looks good. Someday, I’d like to do a complete frame-off restore and I have a feeling that in 10 years that spray on liner will look like crap. Might regret doing the bedliner, we’ll see.
I thought it would be best to put the old top and doors on.

The window seals are brittle and dry rotted. The windows won’t go up or down. Taking the doors apart and replacing seals is next month’s priority and I think I’ll try to spray the doors and top when I’ve got the doors stripped down. This is a good time to fess-up that my skillset for automotive painting and general wrench-turning is suspect, but I’m doing it anyway. It’s fishing season, I’ll try not to slack.

The next biggest rust area was the exterior, I had a couple spots of rust bubbling-up under the paint needing to be addressed.

For the most part, the original paint is still good, so I tried to be minimal.

I need to find a welder to fill the small rust hole but hopefully my work slowed the rust and bought some time.

Man, the old girl is dry.
Every bushing is brittle and cracked and she needs to be de-greased, scrubbed, sanded and painted. The bottom of the tub has some rust issues, too.

So, I purchased a product called POR-15 and will hand paint the tub bottom, frame and all suspension components. At $95 for 2 quarts, I’m hoping its good as advertised at killing rust.
First part of the undercarriage cleanup was a used gas tank I’d bought. Previous tank owner thought it’d be great to cover it in roll on bed liner. I don’t agree.

After a long weekend of laying on my back eating grease, rust, and no telling, progress has slowed. This is taking longer than I thought. Plan was to have undercarriage ready before the springs and tires went on.
But parts came in and I can’t stand looking at it sit on the floor.

PS - I think using your boys as an excuse to re-do YOUR Jeep that YOU are going to drive for the next few years is a pathetic/great execuse.....

BB's right, Interco Super Swampers TSL. They make several kinds of TSL's, these are the LTB.
