    rice farming and ducks 101

    learn me about it plz...
how much does good rice ground cost per acre rent for farming?
what is standard rate for gulf duck leases?
what are the best duck hunting rice counties?
around the gulf, are jackson co farms some of the best for yield and sport?
are the water aquifer levels becoming a huge concern?

    thank you!

Chambers county is probably the most rice producing county in the state now. All water is bought via canal systems. Here we use LNVA (lower neches valley authority) mostly a few smaller ones but for the most part LNVA. All the rice hunted by hunters is farmed by land owners and leased to hunters. Going rate is about 1k per 100 acres right now. Water is $74 a foot acre for duck water through LNVA.

You’ll get the argument the west side of Houston is best then you’ll hear guys say the east side where I am. I’m here to tell you I much prefer hunting here than west of town. Best part for me is I get two openers because I have a farm north of 10 and one south of 10.

$5,000 - $10,000 per blind in LA and you gotta pay the farmer to buffalo the blind area and flood the fields. Sadly unless you know somebody or own the land, fewer and fewer people are duck hunting these days. If you include the 15 day teal season, a hunter has approx. 80 days to hunt.

I’m not sure what the going rate is for leasing to farm. I’ll ask some of the farmers I know who lease land to farm.

Snake raking is just making a hole for the ducks

Rice ground will cost you $125 per acre to cash lease if you were going to farm a crop. This is west of Houston

thanks bro. google sent me on a haunting search.

pinoak, thanks. 125 sounds like a pretty nice rate. my thoughts are to possible have a grazing operation, along with rice ground to lease on a share basis.

it seems like decent diversity for ag?

Snake rake is a roller chopper pulled around to knock down the rice stubble creating clear water for the ducks to land in.
