Default Heck of a deal.

Went to gibsons in Weatherford to look around at the used guns looking for a decent rifle to rebarrel. As I was looking at the guns I noticed an old heavy barrelled Winchester model 70 in 30-06. It was ok looking stock was dinged up but mainly dust and grime. It had a 4x wire frame scope and a leather sling on it. I was about to hand it back until I seen the tag. 175.00!! I can't buy an action for that. I thought what the heck.

Got it home and broke it down and scrubbed it with the intentions of taking it to the Smith and get busted apart and noticed it had a timney trigger installed. This got the wheels turning. Action is now very smooth it's got a good trigger and I've got some 30-06 ammo somewhere. I took the scope off and replaced it with a vx1 3x9 just to shoot from the bench. Since I was headed out to the ranch anyways.

Got it on paper and first group with the Winchester 150 gr silver box left me unimpressed.

Somewhere around 3"
I thought I might as well try my favorite ammo Hornady sst 150 brainers. And I was shocked. A legit 9/16 group!!
I don't want to do much to it but I'll probably just ceracote it since the blueing is worn in spots. Any suggestions on the color. The black is ok but wanting to try something a little different. I usually don't fall into deals so I'm excited about it for sure.

Man I would have a hard time cerakoting it. Nothing like a little character on a throw around beater/loaner rifle. But I would run with a color as close to the deep ďbluingĒ color as you can get

I would leave her as is, coat her with oil and clean her routinely after use. That's a steal of as deal. Can't beat the classic look! Nothing measures up to traditional.

bet you can reshoot that winchester ammo and it will group alot better now that you have fouled the barrel. Your first group is always a crapper after cleaning.

If you kerokote that thing you kill it. Oil up that stock wood and let the blue fade. Itís got character and is a shooter !

Gibsons is one of my favorite stores, I visit the one in Kerrville often. They always have some great deals on so many items. Helpful folks there also.
I agree with the others, not to Cerakote it. Its 51 years old. It would look funny in high heels and lipstick if ya catch my drift.

To me a rifle is just a tool. I am always surprised at the comments acting like changing it is sacrilege. It would have sentimental value if passed down through family, but buying it cheap off a rack? That thing would be fair game to whatever I felt like changing.

Nice find though, looks like a great shooter.

LOVE those ole' Winchesters! I'd leave it original as well. Seems to be hit and miss with me at Gibson's...some great pricing and not so great, but that's everywhere. Key is to get a sales rep with a personality that will talk a little and not have the "gun store" attitude, lol!! Great buy for you!!

Well I didnt take the leave it alone advice. It was too hard too keep the bluing from getting suface rust specks. So I had every part ceracoated from the bolt to the scope ring screws. I then hit a bump in the road I busted up the stock. I let it sit for a month or so and even had it up for trade on here. I decided to go ahead and get a new stock. I decided on the hogue but only wanted it in tan ghillie. I looked around and found one. I slapped it all together. I think I got myself a bomb proof rifle that looks pretty good too.

That only thing that I don’t like is that the rings don’t match the scope. You have yourself a fine rifle, congrats

It looks fine to me.
The OP can answer the question on what color Cerakote was used. It doesn't look Graphite Black but more "greyish" like maybe Sniper Grey was used.

I used Tungsten and flat black. It was tungstan on everything except the bolt body, safety control area, scope bases, and the actual iron sight blades. I really like the offset from scope and base. Gotta few like that, **** colton you sure know how to hurt.

$175 and you stumbled onto the right ammo to be deadly with ?

Iíd clean it, oil her up, and make it my shooter in the woods. No worries about scratching the wood or bluing.
