After a couple years away from the area its that time again. I live in Austin and planning a scouting trip soon if anyone wants to hook up.
Wondering if it look similar to last year with all the rain. |

Yegua is preferred. In years past I hunting nails early in the season and was covered with people because it's so easy to navigate/easy access.
In yegua you can get back in and see less people early from my experience. |

I don't think you'll have much luck scouting anytime soon. The entire area is still under water.

I live in San Marcos and hunted out there quite a bit last year, Nails and Yegua. If we get rains again, even once, like we did last summer, it's gonna be a water park in there. Plenty of times I drove out there and had to turn back around because of the ragining creeks. Only if it's like last year though, hoping it stays drier this season!

Hopefully the rains hold off and we have a good crop of acorns to hold the deer.
Planning on heading out mid-late July if anyone wants to tag along. May camp at the camp ground if it's open. |

Are you allowed to park along the highways/roads to access or do you have to park at the on-sight registration?

Going to be different. Very tough for a someone whondoesnt know the land. Right now it is looking like it will bring all the hunter closer to each other so I expect the hunting to be harder than normal on anything more than a year old lol. Good luck and I think I'm just going to fish out of my tree stand instead of carrying a bow. Hmmmmm never shot a duck from a tree stand either....... Might have to check that one off the bucket list

It was damp out there 2 weekends ago. I bet it's flooded now.
Gonna make it a little rough getting in away from the road hunters. |

Ya we've had 6"+ of rain in the area so far this week. I bet it has quite a bit of standing water again.

In seriousness, it will more than likely be another year like last year. Tons of mosquitoes from standing water everywhere, full chest waders needed to cross creeks, and a few days where ya just drive out there, see the creek, and drive right back home.
I'll be out there a few weeks before the opener, I'll update what the creeks are looking like. |

Great deer. My bet is that they never enter the public hunting area. Biggest buck I've seen out there two years ago was a 130 class ten point chasing a doe across the road near nails creek. He was real nice.

One of the biggest deer I've seen in person was at Yegua State Park. Perfect 12. That said those deer know where the safety zones are. The are practically tame in around the parks just doe laying everywhere. This is absolutely not the case for the public area. Why would they leave when the doe are literally thick around the parks.

With creek at 4.6 today it was still within the banks. 2-3ft from busting over. We're at 6ft now. Any dry land that was there is about to go under. Replay of yalls season last year. This could keep everything underwater till opener.

I feel like I saw a "banned" tag where it used to say "Pope and Young" on his banner. Not sure what happened, met him last year around this time and helped me get my Archery Club at Texas State University off the ground. Great guy whose valuable input about the area will be missed this year! |

With the rain thats coming down right npw on top of the terrential down pour last night, it will be inaccessible for a while I bet. I dont know how much rain we had last night, but a neighbor was tubing down his driveway in it and he lives on a hill...
