Default 6.5 Grendel enough weapon for deer?

I built a 6.5 Grendel and love shooting this weapon. It has almost zero recoil and is wicked accurate.

Is this a suitable weapon for whitetail?

I used a 6.5 Grendel to harvest an Axis buck and he didn't take but a couple of steps after the shot. This being the one and only deer that I have taken with the 6.5 makes me question, is it enough. Was my Axis a fluke?

Is there anyone on the GS that has used the Grendel whitetail?

Shot my first doe last weekend with my Grendel, and it was plenty of gun. I was shooting the 123 grain Hornady SST round, and it did its job. Will keep hunting with it!

Was the shot through the shoulder? Did she drop or was there tracking involved?

I knew folks years ago that killed deer every year with a .22 lr

Pop them in the lungs, they will die

Never used the 6.5 Grendel, but my daughter took one with the 300BLK last weekend. It performed extremely well. I've seen plenty of deer that were shot with 30-06 and 308 that were no more damaged than this doe. Since the 6.5mm is a pretty commonly used caliber for mid-sized game, and the Grendel performs quite efficiently, I would think it would do quite well for whitetail. The only piece of advice I would stipulate is, know the bullets you use and know at what distance/velocity they cease to properly mushroom.

She was about 50 yards away and facing me. Never could get her to turn broadside. I was 12 feet up in a tripod, and my shot went through her front shoulder, and exited her chest right between her front legs. Great bloodtrail and she maybe went 40 yards.

.22 LR is plenty so 6.5 Grendel will work Fine.

It is a big step forward from a 22-250 or a .223

Ask Sportsman (Rusty) and see what he has to say. Spoke with him yesterday and learned his son took a deer at over 300 yards with 6.5 G last weekend. That is, if memory serves me correctly.

What would be more ideal? A 120 odd grain 6.5 bullet at 2600 FPS is more than enough to kill any whitetail in the world at reasonable ranges.

There have been 100s of thousands of deer killed with a 243 which is smaller, lighter, and slower.
6.5 will be more than enough. You don't need a belted mag to kill deer.

Grendel is amazing on deer (and pigs). When I was on MLD doe duty I killed over 100 with it. I learned a lot. Nosler Ballistic Tips are awesome in it due to the impact velocities. Stay far away from Barnes bullets again due to impact velocities.

I shot two coyotes with a 6.5 Grendel this past wknd. After seeing the damage, I’d have zero issues shooting a whitetail, axis, or muley with one.

155mm artillery I guess: you can miss the vitals by a dozen feet and still kill it, set it to fire from your game camera, you dont have to get in the stand, and it'll hamburger the meat!

Ultimate deer round, light recoil and fast follow up for multiple targets.
I've killed 3 With the hornady black ammo. Looked no different than the ones shot with the 270 right next to them

I killed a cull buck two weeks ago with my 6.5 grendel. It fell right where I shot it and passed through right behind both shoulders and hit the lungs. Left a hole the size of what my .270 leaves. It made me a believer in it. Can't beat it small compact hunting rifle in a ar 15 platform.

Shot three deer this weekend all with 123 sst. One neck shot and two shoulder shot. None had exit wounds that led to no blood trail. With that said we found two of the bullets inside the deer and the mushroomed really good and the deer did not run far. I am a little concerned on what would have happened if shot placement wasn't as good.

The shadow and I did it again yesterday. I haven’t had time to write up a post, but I shot this 11pt at 210 yds with a 12.5” barreled 6.5 Grendel. Dropped in its tracks. He was larger than I thought. 175 lbs on the hoof.

Not to rude but DUH! Each of those use almost twice the powder.

My son and I have killed a boatload of animals with the Grendel.

Even used those non expanding Barnes bullets!
