    1st Mechanical "broad head"??

    At Mystic Seaport today in CT, and they were talking about the heads used on whale harpoons. The pics below are from a mechanical design in the late 1800's. it's goal was to make as small an entrance hole, and then stay inside. Thought it was pretty neat.





    Apparently it was based on an old Inuit design, only it pivoted when it was retracted.

      Very cool. How log was the metal shaft?... I wonder what kind of penetration they were getting.

        Shaft was only about 3' long. They rowed right up on top of the whales and harpooned them. It was definitely interesting. After they tired out, they used a different instrument with a longer shaft for killing.
