Default Beans and cornbread...meal or side item?

The two sides of the dispute:

1)seasoned beans (only a few pieces of bacon/ham/for flavor) and cornbread is a meal
2)the above is a side item, unless a pound or two of andouille sausage / ham / etc is added to the seasoned beans, THEN it's a meal.

Discuss.

Happy New Year!!

Beans with minimal meat for seasoning only is a side. Beans with at least 1 pound of meat per 3 people is a meal.

Not to derail but my wife argues that dirty rice isn't a meal but we ate it several times with crackers when I was growing up. Maybe we were poorer than I remember.

It's a meal or a side here. If we only have meat for seasoning, we will add a spoonful of sour cream and some shredded cheese to a serving, and then I pour on the hot sauce!

If it's all I got it's a meal.
If there's a brisket involved it's a side.

To answer the Op, number two.

When I was growing up, cornbread and sweet milk was a meal, and we were poor too, and I remember every bit of it, but I didn't know it until I got grown.

Beans and cornbread is a meal. Everybody I know puts ham or ham hocks in the beans for seasoning. Cornbread ALWAYS goes with beans. Also have rice with it. Beans and cornbread not considered hyfalutin in the south. Just good old down home food. People up north won't ear it cause they say it's a poor mans meal. I'll eat anytime of the year. Great in the winter to warm youbup. Beans rice cornbread with a slice of onion and a cold glass of milk, yeah buddy. All day long.

Not only is it a meal but is one of my favorite- Cook beans, refrigerate for 2 days- reheat and cook sweet cornbread- split cornbread and lay out in bowl and cover with beans.

Beans, corn bread, BBQ deer sausage, slices of onion, and glass of milk was our meal a lot of times. Sure am craving it right now.

This is the way we did it growing up. Big plate, lay out your cornbread and cover with beans. Every now and then we had fried taters to go with. With this weather that sounds awesome right now.

I might be weird, no I AM weird.
My buddy need the beads here at Deer Camp. Starts them Saturday am before we go out, they cook all day. He adds sausage, bacon, and smoked ham.
I'd rather eat that than a Ribeye cooked over a fire.
I've done it before. I always eat the ribeye but I'm miserable all weekend.
My buddy could be too tho. I do get a tiny bit gassy.
