Shotgun is indeed an effective home or elsewhere defense weapon...

Some of my personal favorites:

1. SRM12-16 16 rounds +1 in the barrel... 4 selectable magazine tubes (#4 birdshot in 2 tubes and 00buckshot in the other 2... plus a very sharp breeching tool for a muzzle brake...

2. KSG12 14 rounds +1 in the barrel... 2 7round selectable magazine tubes, one full of #4's and 1 full of 00 buckshot...

3. Benelli M4 Tactical with a tube estension Just 8 rounds of whatever makes you happy...

Or, you could keep it in the safe when you aren't at home.

I want something that stays in the same position 24/7/365 so there is no doubt when I hear something at 3am that it will be there. A weapon that you put in the safe every time you leave the house and pull back out when you get home doesn't sound like a good option IMO.

Yup

A fresh can of wasp and hornet spray...

Accurate over 20 feet.
For back up:
A pistol grip 12 gauge with a flashlight.
A semi auto hand gun with a laser light.
A revolver. (light is optional)
A big knife or anything sharp. (light is optional)
A smelly pair of skid mark underwear or stink foot socks.(light is optional)
A rock. (light is optional?)
Have Roseann Barr appear from nowhere. (light is mandatory)

Or, you could keep it in the safe when you aren't at home.

I keep mine loaded and next to my bedroom door. When I leave the house, I put it in the safe and grab my EDC pistol. Opposite happens when I come home from work.

That being said, i still have 2 870s loaded ready to go in 2 other parts of my house.

If I hear something I gotta check out at night, I'll already be in my bedroom and grab the SBR/ AR Pistol

Try clearing a house after shooting a 12 gauge in a hallway with no ear pro at night. It's no bueno, suppression is a must

A dog, most break in's result from checking a house first. If you have a dog barking they don't come back.

I wouldn't consider it ready for home defense if a round wasn't already chambered.

Shotguns are notorious for going off if dropped. Depending on the brand and safety, most of the time you should never have one in the chamber. Unless your okay with shooting yourself. Handguns and AR, should always have a round in the chamber. At least that's the way we were trained.

I should clarify, if you have a tactical shotgun with bolt safety, then yes you can store loaded. Its the standard shotguns with trigger safeties that are very dangerous and should not be chambered until ready to shoot.
