According to a report just posted by Reason, rioters broke in as VP Pence was presiding over the Senate and in the process of tallying an electoral college vote. Procedures were immediately suspended, the Capitol was placed on lockdown with all members and staff being told to shelter in place (how do you “shelter in place” in a building that’s under siege?), and VP Pence was reportedly rushed out of chambers by his security team and taken to an undisclosed location.

Again, all of this is from just one source.
