So in March my wife and I were fortunate enough to purchase our own piece of Texas outside our normal home. We purchased 32 Acres in Mullin. The first thing that my boys (11 and 8) did was set a feeder a couple of cameras, and built a blind.
A ton of money, shirts full of sweat and many days of anticipation played off last night. The boys and I set up in our new blind, enjoyed some quite time.. (I read the green screen to see how others were dealing with 90* opening day, the boys watched football on the iPad and we waited for about 2 hours. They almost had me convinced on abandoning the deer hunt and just shoot the armadillo that rummaging about.
All the sudden, about 10 doe and babies showed up, grunting started and a few bucks showed. After discussion on which one to take my 11 year old took aim on the most appropriate buck.
He pulled the trigger and to I looked like a miss. No jump or any real movement. The does scattered, he turned his head and trotted off. About 10 minutes later we walked down range and no blood anywhere. I told him that I was pretty sure he missed but we proceeded to walk down the hill where he went. About 40 yards away and under a tree, we found him!
Took him to Wesley Head in Goldthwaite, great place BTW. Never been this particular processor but was recommended to me. TPW happened to be filming so my boys Buck got to be on the episode allegedly. I tried some samples his wife had set out... Really good meat. Can’t wait to get ours back.
