    2010 "Spartans' Round" Scores

The Spartans' Round utilizes a handicap scoring system. Your handicap is a simple formula: Subtract your score from the highest score and multiply the difference by .75. This is your handicap. Add your handicap to your base score and this will give you your adjusted (handicapped) score. Handicaps are rounded up to the next whole number.

Shooter January Score Adjusted Score Handicap
    Mark Blackmon 423 423 0
    Scott Warren 417 422 5
    Jack Ivy 416 421 5
    Jim Reeves 406 419 13
    Robert Evans 393 416 23
    David Bennett 388 414 26
    George Avouris 384 413 29

Shooter February Score Adjusted Score Handicap

    Clifton McCoy 411 428 17
    Jim Reeves 405 427 22
    David Bennett 401 426 25
    George Avouris 394 424 30

Salt Grass Archery Club has a brand new game, the Spartans’ Round! The Spartans’ Round will consist of a 15-target 3-D course and a 14-target Spot course (Field or Hunter). The decision between field and hunter will be made via coin toss the day before the shoot. You will learn which targets will be used on the day of the shoot.

Due to the fact that we are paying out cash prizes, and to avoid scoring mistakes, we are utilizing double scorecards. The Spartans’ Round will also utilize special Spartans Stakes. The stakes will be set to provide a challenging course, requiring shooters to kneel, lean, bend and stretch to make the shot.

Shoot fees for the Spartans’ Round are as follows:

    Salt Grass Members:

    Shoot Fee - $10.00

    Spartans’ Fee - $10.00

    Non-Members:

    Shoot Fee - $15.00

    Spartans’ Fee - $10.00

    Mulligans:

    Non-Spartans - May have 2 @ $1.00 each

Spartans' Round - No mulligans allowed

The Spartans’ Fees are used for payouts. If we have 10 shooters or less, 100% of the Spartans’ fees will go to the winner. If there are more than 10 shooters, we will pay 80% of the pot. In the beginning we will pay first place only. After the game is established and we start to see consistent turnouts, we will revisit the payout schedule and may add more places to the cash payouts.

The first round everyone shoots scratch (raw scores, no handicap). This round will set your handicap. After the first round, shooters will be handicapped based upon their first round scores. Your handicap will be 75% of the difference between your score and the top score. The purpose of using a handicap system is to encourage improvement by fostering competition. We believe that competition is necessary to improve your level of performance. We wanted to offer a competitive game that would provide a challenge to both the top shooters and to average shooters who are looking for ways to improve their skills.

The official Spartans’ Round Competition begins in September and runs through December. There will be two shoots per month, held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, for a total of 8 shoots. Any Spartans’ Round shooter who wins 4 or more rounds will receive a late doe season hunt at Sherwood Forest in Cotulla for one spike and one doe.

For the remainder of the regular club shoots for 2009 (July and August) we will shoot Spartans’ Rounds in conjunction with the regular monthly shoots. These are NOT part of the Spartans’ Round Tournament beginning in September. They will pay out a cash prize, but do not qualify you for the hunt. You may, however set your handicap for the Spartans’ Round Tournament in these two shoots. Handicaps will change from month to month depending on your score.

If you are a hard-core 3-D shooter, not to worry! You may choose to shoot the 15 3-D targets twice instead of shooting the Spartans’ Round with the 14 field targets.
