help me pick a prime lens

I have a canon eos70d. Currently I am just shooting the two kit lenses and I am wanting a new lens. Thinking a 50mm prime lens. which would you choose and why. My budget is about $500

The 85 1.8 is "the" portrait lens. You can get one that goes 1.2 but that falls out of your price range.

The nifty 50 is great as well and will easily fit inside your range.

I guess the answer depends on what you want to use it for.

You could probably get the 24 f2.8, and the 85 f1.8 for around $500. Then add a 50mm later on.

How I chose my primes was to go back through all my photos and see what focal length I used the most. For me it was 24-35mm, 70-90mm and 200mm on a full frame.

I personally would get something "wider" than a 50 if you are wanting it to be an all around lens.
        Maybe something between 28-35mm?
I'm not hip on the canon market but there has to be a wide prime in your price range with a fast aperture.
