Default Can We Drop The .5 From Deer Aging?

Can we just say a deer is 4, 5 or whatever his age is and stop all the 4.5, 5.5 stuff?

Guys age deer in the summer at 4.5 and age the same deer six months later at 4.5 because anytime they talk age they are programmed to tack on ďand a halfĒ to everything.

Deer aging and women telling women how old their baby is are the only times I can think of people trying to get that detailed on how old something is.

The deer is 3, 4, 5, whatever and thatís it. We all know todayís not his half birthday. 1st world rant over.

I’ve tried to start that movement before and always get lectured about what time of year deer are born, like I didn’t already know that.

I do tend to call deer .5 in the winter, but I really donít know if theyíre 3.5 or 3.75. Lol

It doesnít bother me either way. I guess itís the OCD in people, but I couldnít really care less what people use to age and what they say. Itís all the same.

On your threads I wonít use .5 from here on out.

I'd love to support your endeavor but until we can get the for "sell, sail or sale" statements corrected I just find the man-power for your cause.

Reat assured it will be at the top of the first world issues list once we correct the above issue.

I stopped using the .5 a long time ago.

But if we are gonna gripe a little, if guys could stop with the "he's either 3 or 3.5"...or "He looks 5 or 5.5 to me"...that would be cool.

Speaking about the .5 on deer ages, what about the .9 on gas prices? Seems dumb to me but I guess there's a reason for it...

There was an article in TTH about aging deer and how it’s mostly a guess. They had several pictures of bucks of a known age and asked the experts to age them. I don’t recall the specifics but it was a surprisingly low number of accuracy. The article was suggesting referring to deer as immature, mature and post mature. I like the idea unless of course you have an intensely managed heard or are HF.

My exact thought on this subject!

I killed a 10 point that was well over 10 years old and he scored 87Ē. I knew he was old when I had him at 15 yards. Put an arrow in him and when I got to camp, a hunter said...ĒI have passes in him all year long because he is 3.5 years oldĒ. He was aging him at 150 yards.

I just knew he was post mature!

The reason why the .5 is added is...When we are ready to kill the deer he is at his half age status.
Perhaps being a deer life is so short...that .5 is a big deal...If you're the deer

Yep. I agree I love these guys that say we only harvest deer that are 7 yrs old. Unless they are tagged in a pen hard to tell. I hunted south Texas for years and kept saying he's 4 or 5 and wait til next yr. We finally renamed the place " next years ranch" I like immature, mature, post mature and dead!

You are aware these deer are typically born from May to July.....so someone saying a deer is 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, or 4.5 during the summer doesn’t know much about deer.

Depends on latitude just north of you our deer are hitting ground April/May most deer have a 200 day poke/dump. Pretty easy math, deer season hits on halfís. I guess I could get behind the OCD half thing but... itís always been there. Just go with it Darts

I do not know what you people are talking about. The lease I have been on for the last 12 years does not have a buck on it over 4.5 errr 4 years old. I know this because our expert lease member with a degree from Texas A&M in wildlife biology class of 1980 (who owns a BBQ joint and has never held a job as a biologist) told me so.

That just means we need to drop the 1/2 year, but use the Korean version of age. There you are 1 when you are born. (age is "1st year")

Easy buy-in for everyone, as the 3.5 y/o that you should pass is now 4 years old and back on the shoot list.
