You might be on to something if they invite his kid over for hotdogs and hamburgers and his kid instead pulls a prime tomahawk out of their fridge to grill and feast on.

it's a bad situation. The kid was taught not to follow the rules. The dad is a jerk.
You need to address the situation as an example to your own son. if you let it go, what are you telling your son?
We all learn some lessons the hard way. Sometimes as a parent, we have to be the unfortunate teacher.
i would put a $ value to it, but not ask for the money.
A real man will offer it if he is remorseful.
Tell him all the ramifications of his actions.
your situation with your lease members,
with your son,
with him,
with his son,
cost of lease, feed, batteries, time.
Your loss of shooting a buck this year.
Also mention future trust in other guest or lease members guest, lease members trust in you. He made it hard for a lot of people.

Tell him what hunting means to you and your son. What you hope you can teach son. Then ask him straight up, What did he teach his son by allowing him to shoot a buck when you clearly told them the could not.

I think you did a very fair thing, and see you have learned having guests can sometimes be a pain. Just curious didnít see if you already said, but what type of buck, cull, management, trophyetc. would you consider it?

Dang. Thought this was going to be a rant about guests showing up empty handed and not helping clean up. What is this world coming to?

This is the reason I don't allow guest to the lease anytime.

What is a 600 lb cow worth to the rancher? What would he ask from me?

What is a 130" buck worth to the landowner if it was 4.5yo vs 5.5yo (their min age)? What would he ask from me?
You don’t wanna know what a cow costs, it’s gonna be every dollar they’d ever make off the cow (the high side) including all the calf’s it would have and then a premium for that cow itself

Edit: I wanted to add I’ve never killed a cow but I have heard stories

It sounds like you handled it about as well, as could be expected.
You've got the horns in hand, so I'd think that he'll probably pay up, just to get them back for his kid. $550 was more than generous on your part. It'll hit him in his wallet a little, but it's an amount that he should be able to come up with. Whatever you do, DO NOT give him the horns until the check clears, if he indeed sends it.
