    "Or the Credence."

One of my dad's old buddies (chopper pilot) had a cassette tape in his old ranch truck that had a song about Charlie sitting in his truck on the trail "filing his chain." Apparently, the NVA would shackle some of their drivers in the truck so they couldn't bail if they wanted. Another song about "Friendly FAC" was on the tape. Good stuff!

American Woman - The Guess Who

Randy Bachman expressed the view in 2014 that it was "an anti-war protest song", explaining that when they came up with it on stage, the band and the audience had a problem with the Vietnam War. Said Bachman: "We had been touring the States. This was the late '60s, one time at the US/Canada border in North Dakota they tried to draft us and send us to Vietnam. We were back in Canada, playing in the safety of Canada where the dance is full of draft dodgers who've all left the States".

CSN&Y - Suite Judy Blue Eyes

My family used to send tapes (smaller reel to reel) back and forth to my Uncle when he was there. I vividly remember him speaking directly to me about the war and Suite Judy Blue Eyes was playing in the background. My cousin was an infant when my Uncle went to Nam. He doesn't even really have any memories of his Dad. I told him that story about the tapes on a camp out in West Texas in the nineties and I ended up sobbin' like a little kid. I think I was about ten years old when my Uncle served.

In 1972, it seemed that every time I heard a civilian radio it was playing Layla. That song is still stuck in my mind and takes me back. Another one that makes me think of that time is Reflections of My Life.

You ain’t lived until you’ve watched flares slowly decend over the jungle to “All along the Watchtower” by Hendrix whilst the enemy creeps up on ya.

My landlord in college served as a helicopter medic in Vietnam, he had a little motorcycle shop out back. Many Friday nights I'd stop out and have a few beers with him and his buddies, those nights, at some point Johnny Cash's Drive Home would come on the radio. After that, the party was over, he'd just be gone.
He told no tales, but his daughters would stop in all the time and they explained a few things about their dad and how certain things would trigger strong memories and he didn't care to be around anyone for a while after.
