I wanted something that could handle all situations. I decided on an Athlon red dot with their 5x magnifier. magnifier pivots off to the side in order to just use red dot. Athlon comes with pivot mount. great product and great price.

For an all around plinker/hunter out to 350 yards, I like just a red dot with no magnification. Aimpoint micros are the way to go if you got the coin.
