    Welding unistrut?

I'm putting a new garage door opener up and the old bracket the unit hangs from won't work. The joists run across the garage sideways and not lengthwise. Where the new unit will hang is just sheetrock. I have an idea for an adjustable bracket using unistrut. Can it be welded and hold good?

Why not brace between the joists with a 2 x 6 and anchor to that?

Drill holes through sheet rock where it needs to be mounted. Then add 2x6 cross braces over those holes between ceiling joist.

The attic is decked above the garage. I'm too old and fat to be crawling around messin with all that. I got the opener up yesterday, but I want to come up with something better to hang it from.

Mount the brace on the ceiling then. You could use 2X 6 ‘s or a 3/4 piece of plywood screwed to the studs and then mount the regular hangers to that

This. Paint plywood white and cut to fit area needed. Secure to joist.

Or remove sheet rock add braces and replace sheetrock.

Maybe go thru the whole thing into the decking in the attic with some all thread?

That's too simple. Remember, I'm a machinist, we over design everything.

This. They don't actually hold that much weight. Mine had to be moved a few inches so I ran a couple 2x6s in between my joists.

You can weld it. Don't breathe the fumes and you are better off grinding or scuffing the galvanize off before welding.
