Just get there early, drink plenty of water/electrolytes, and your kid will be just fine. For 90% of folks, altitude sickness is something they mentally psych themselves into, then low and behold they get it. They forget that they didn't drink any water, or eat, sleep, or get electrolytes in near the quantity they needed in the day or two prior to getting there, and probably ate like crap the entire time they were there.

I was around 10k' all last weekend, the entire weekend, with 60 lbs on my back going up and down the mountains. I didn't need oxygen, just water/gatorade and food.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. High altitude will rob his body of moisture at a much higher rate that he is used to.
