Looking to hunt the ladonia unit, never been here before. Can any of you give me a little help, not necessarily there but before I get there. Saw a couple water holes north of the unit near the river just east of 3345.

Anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Went out yesterday for the first time and sat in a tree from daylight until dark. Didn't see anything but armadillos! Maybe next time!

Buddy of mine hunted it this weekend (no unit named). First time he'd ever stepped foot on the place. Found a spot under some oaks and just waited.

Finally, he sees a buck that he said we wouldn't been able to shoot even if it did come closer than 80 yards, that he would of had buck fever so bad. He said it was bigger than anything on his wall.

That's awesome! I'll be back at it this weekend, hopefully I can have the same luck! That's exactly what I did. I have never been there in my life. Just found a nice big oak that was dropping acorns like crazy and put my climber up in it and waited. Nothing came by though. I left a camera up so hopefully I will know more when I go back, if it's still there lol

Where are you guys seeing the Unit Numbers? I have the maps but no numbers are on them, just different shades of colors with a key at the bottom.

Headed out tomorrow afternoon for my first time in my first treestand. Scouting has been all remote this year so I'm sticking with the unit I spent the most time on last year.

One request for advice: do whitetails tend to bed in areas with pines/evergreens or oaks/broadleaf trees?

That will depend on the situation. I've seen them use cedars and such during storms. Or any kind of brush or dead-fall to help break a storm or the wind. But I've also seen them bed in wild plumb thickets. And open rolling fields and prairies just like mullieys do. I've also seen the bed on ridge tops so they can catch any scent from the updraft winds from below during the day. I know of a marsh where the ground is soggy in a small bowl. Helps keep them cool in warmer weather. During cooler windy days, look for them on southern side of hillsides catching the warmth of the sun.

They will bed where they feel safest at the moment. And meets their needs.

No deer on stand this morning. Bumped 3 when I went to check my trail camera. Found an oak dropping acorns with lots of tracks. Will be setting up there for the foreseeable future.

Please guys, do not mention units on a public forum. Keep it in pm's.

You have been warned. If you go to hunt and your stand is gone or there's 10 guys set up within 100 yards of you, don't say I didn't tell you so.

That's exactly what happened to me when some dummy on the green screen started mentioning units which just happened to be the one I hunted.

Had a ton of guys on top of me on opening morning. Shot a doe, came back the next day to retrieve my stand and it was gone.

NO MENTIONING OF UNITS!!!!!

Sound advice blood trail! I guess I'm just too trustworthy at times. People around here always have a field day with me when they find out I haven't locked my vehicles in years lol.

I had a doe and 2 fawns come in at 40 yards this morning. They grabbed a few acorns and headed back into the trees after about 3 minutes. No shot opportunity. Hunted a new spot this evening but got shutout.

Default 1st Timer

Any advice you would give a first timer to LBJ? I went up and scouted an area yesterday after reading a little on this sight. Found a nice area to take my climber.

I read about the orange vest and cap, but are there any other major rules/laws I should be aware of?

Thanks

If you see other hunters vehicles, don't hunt there that day. General antler restrictions. Bow only. That's all I can think of right off hand.

Stop by the USFS office in Decatur. They will fill ya in. It's just pass the 380 underpass on Hwy 287 north. And on the north (right) side of the road. A very small office. Don't miss it.

I've heard during rifle season it's shotgun only, must use slug or buckshot. And of course bow is allowed at that time.

That is incorrect. During general season muzzloaders, or shotguns using buck shot or slugs are legal. No high powered rifles, and no baiting.
