Default Night Vision hunting Thread

Figured we could start a thread on night vision. Kills, thoughts, reviews, etc.

I recently picked up a Sightmark Photon 3.5x digital scope.
Man! These things are amazingly fun to use. This past weekend Gpena and I headed out for some pig slaying and got into them deep. He shot 2(or 3) at the pond on Saturday(non-nv) so I went back Sunday with my Photon. Saw 3 groups come in, 2 of which in pitch darkness. Ended up putting the smack down on 3 of a sounder of 6. Sat back and waited, another big boar came out and started doing his best baywatch impression, shot him too. So far, in two outings, 4 pigs, 2 coons.

In both instances, I was able to watch these pigs, without any light whatsoever and make accurate shots on them, even running. Its like playing a video game.

I'm hooked on shooting in the dark.

Any other experiences in scopes?

I was wondering if those types of scopes were any good. I've read some reviews, but your thread puts it in perspective. I think I may have to snag one as well. I've got a military issued PVS-14 that I barely use that I've maybe put an hour of usage on in the last yr (mostly just scanning around at night or walking to the blind in the dark in the early mornings). It had 5-7 hrs of use when I got it and sadly, it spends all its time in the safe. I will say though, that PVS-14 is flat out BAD ***!! Gen 3 nv is crazy!

Awesome pics Chuy! So glad to finally see some kill photos from all these Photons I've sold to TBH'ers.....not to down play your coon kill pics.

If anyone is interested, I've still got on in stock, ready to ship and more on the way. Minimum advertised price is $499.97, PM me for the TBH discounted price.

I'm running it on a 6.8 ARP barrel. 120 grain Hornady V-Max

Accuracy is great and clarity is amazing for the price. The pic doesn't do it justice. I need to get that recorder so I can record.

Black and quite video game.

Hey glidewell. Any pics?

We have 2 gen3 3x scopes. We go once a week at least between the end of deer season til the start of bow season. Between nv and the dogs, we hunt several thousand acres of farm and pasture. I don't know how to post pictures, but we don't take many pictures either. Mostly of the big ones.

There are others I would rather have (PVS 22, not PS 22) but the D740 works great and is crystal clear. The only drawback is it is only .223 rated, but that isn't a big deal when your .223 is a sub 1/2 MOA shooter.

Eco- what thermal unit you have?

Here's looking down our street with 1 house with its porch light on... This is also before I messed with the brightness/contrast and focus! I need to take some better pics when I get the chance.

Here's looking through the PVS-14..

Would love some more pics of the Sightmark Photon 3.5x at night. Just the scope, no other fancy hook ups that enhance night vision. I've been looking a while at this guys stuff and really think they would be a blast. BUt I would have no extra money for accessories and such. Just the scope. Looks great!!

Could of used anything this weekend, so let me tell you a funny story. So I go to chuy's fathers ranch to hunt turkey an pigs with my good buddy Chuy. Friday night was uneventful, we did drive up on what I thought was a bobcat all I had was an eotech on a AR. I put the sight on the eyes the only thing I can see an lower just a hair an squeeze one off. Shot this guy thru the mouth an out the back

Saturday Chuy, his father Jesse, his fathers best friend "uncle" monte, and his dads worker "homie" all sleep in while I head out looking for a turkey. I saw none. So I throw a bag of corn around there pond that is covered up in tracks everywhere, I back out an have a late bfast with everyone back at camp. We mess around the rest of the afternoon and head out for the evening hunt. While going out I realize I forgot the mini sniper hog light at camp and just go on with out it. Ok so this is where it gets funny, from what I was told no one hunts this pond so no blinds are there I tell Chuy don't worry I'll just take a folding chair an hide behind a tree something's gonna show it's covered in tracks. So I sit an wait an a bobcat comes in for a drink, it's early so I go ahead an take a shot. Chuy and I both heard a hit but never found blood or a dead kitty. So I txt Chuy an tell him in still gonna sit something's gonna come out. Darkness falls quick an with out a light my mind starts playing tricks on me. I swear I hear voices all around me an then I start thinking that cat is gonna jump out of this tree ticked off cause I shot at him. So I get out of my chair an walk a couple feet closer to the pond hoping the reflection of the moon off the pond I will be ok till chuy's ready to get picked up. Chuy has his 6.8 rigged out with night vision so he was in no rush. The voices I'm hearing are getting closer an I'm freaking I turn on the light on my cell an I point it out to the pond, I look at my phone to make sure it's working cause all I see is black. It blinds me a bit then I realize all the black 20 feet in front of me has eyes an is staring straight at me. I may or may not have let out a girlish shreak along with about 12 or 13 shots off the 223. Heart is pumping an I'm wired trying to calm down I still hear something an clear the round jammed (or I would have emptied the clip) an two feet in front of me passes the last pig close enough for me to kick. I let three shots off at him and try to get reception on my phone so I can let Chuy know everything's ok an he needs to bring that night scope on over. By the tine I get reception Chuy has txt four times, I jump in the truck to go get him an see him running down the road towards me. So I tell him my story an we laugh an I'm still amped from my near stampede experience. We look for blood an find some an track it to this guyName: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1398828451.673200.jpg

We head back to camp to laugh an skin the pig. His dad says dang all them pigs an you only get one? Found more blood Sunday but no dead pig. Sunday I go back an sit in my chair an with my mini sniper hog light I watch six pigs drink an eat the corn I threw for an hour before the sun comes up, his dad, Chuy, and Monte all ask how come I didn't shoot any of them, well I heard turkey's all around me but never showed themselves, so no shot. I was just glad to get out with some good people, great food, and even better stories. Thanks to Chuy and his father jesse for allowing me to hang out an hunt with them.Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1398828823.304809.jpg

Has anyone put the Photon on a larger caliber AR?
450 Bushmaster or 458 SOCOM?
If so, did it hold zero?

The MTM is great. It's very compact and lite. It works great as a hand held unit or weapons mounted. I wish it had the color options like some the new units. It's not needed but looks cool!

No issues. Just sight it like any other rifle. I did mine dur8ng the day, but i think it would be easier at night. Not sure.

Started on 40 yards and moved back to 100.

I don't currently have one in stock right now, I sold my last one a couple weeks ago. I've got some back ordered though. I should know within a couple weeks if I will get any or not. I've got someone else on the list for one right now. If you are interested and want some more info feel free to send me a PM. Without saying too much, the 5x might not be available much longer (if at all). I should know something more within the next couple weeks.

For those that don't know, the demands for the Photons has been insane. They simply can't produce them fast enough. They've been back ordered since Day 1. I've managed to get a decent amount of what I've had ordered all but one month.

Have you messed with the Pulsar N750? I set your email reminder to let me know when the 5 is back in stock. Has anyone said anything about the laser being to strong?

Edit, Just realized you said PM. I'm sending a PM. Sorry for the hijack Chuy.

I shot this pig the 2nd week of January right after the first round of 3.5X photons were released to the public. 6.8 to the dome at 90 yards while he was pushing the pig pipe! They are IMO the best digital NV for the money out there.

I also have a 5X that I haven't gotten to use yet as I'm waiting for my Mini-14 to get back from Accuracy Systems Inc. My Sightmark rep threw an extra 3.5X on my order that I'm looking to get rid of also if anyone is interested. I really need to get a dvr for mine to record the hunts.

It would be a shame if they got rid of the 5X. Hopefully they make a hybrid of the two that has the screen resolution of the 3.5x and the laser illuminator of the 5x. I still don't understand why they gave the 3.5x the higher resolution, maybe to make up for the lower led IR output...

I was using Thor 3x 320's on my 5.56's and they worked perfect. I tried them out on my 7.62's and they would reboot after multiple shots due to the recoil. The battery compartment springs would lose contact during shots and cause it to reboot.

I just recently got some of the new FLIR RS 320 2.25x's in. I get stateside in a few days and I'll get to head to the range to test them out. Nothing but good reviews from other users on both AR15/AR10 platforms...

I have a feeling this thread is going to hurt my pocket book.

That's AWESOME!!!

I've been wanting to get one for my rifle for a while now but didn't know enough about them.
What brand/model do I need to buy and should I get Night Vision or Thermal?

ATI, the first question is.... Are you married? Hahahaha!

There's tons of info you need to know before you dive into NV or thermal... I read tons and tons of info on each before I jumped in and of course it's been a trial and error with both learning what works out best for me and how I hunt.

I like to spot and stalk and engage 50 yards or closer, but will drop lone boars out to 100 and further...

How do you want to hunt them? What type of rifle will you be mounting it on? NV of course is cheaper to get into and there are certain questions you need to answer before you buy... Same goes for thermal.

If you're serious about buying I can help ya with what you're looking for. I use 3rd Gen NV and thermal right now.

LOL,,, newly married so I keep forgetting sometimes

Actually you and I hunt similar, spot and stalk but I may sit where I know they cross and pop them at night too. The furthest shot would be about 100 yards or less. My rifle is a Savage .270
So you have both a NV and Thermal or is there a model that has both features in one?

I'm looking for something that will allow me to hunt pigs at night. I don't hunt coyotes, coons or anything else during the night time. I want to be able to see them well enough to get a good shot.

Based on what I said and what I need it for Please tell me what brand and model to get and what price range I'm looking at. I was going to buy a fish finder but I may use the money to buy one of these instead.

Thanks!

Jumping in here with a quick question.

How does the Sightmark Photon 3.5x digital scope compare to the 2nd or 3rd Gen NV?

Newly married? Well... I won't be the guy you say "But Bucktag said..."... Hahaha... My NV setup is a 3rd Gen monocular from NVision Optics and they can run from 2500 on up, depending if where you buy it. I mount the monocular behind a NV compatible Eotech and I use a 3x magnifier lens that I snap onto my monocular that allows me to take shots out past 100 easy. You can shop different brands for NV, but you need to make sure it has a ITT tube. My NV has held up nicely and I've had them since 2006. Of course I'm @nal with my gear so I take care of it... For NV you'll need to get a IR light for moonless nights and for better ID'ing your target, and you can get one off amazon.com that is the best one for the price.. (K2 ELR IR Light), just under $200...

If 3k is out of your reach right now for 3rd Gen, you can get away with 2nd Gen as long as it's a quality tube. You can get a monocular 2nd Gen for just over 2k. I've looked through some 2nd Gen tubes and they're decent, but once you've hunted with 3rd Gen, it'll ruin it if you have 2nd Gen...

Not sure what kind of setup you're looking for... Dedicated scope or monocular or a clip on infront of a daytime scope... I've tried all three and I just prefer the monocular route. I don't want to limit a rifle to only night hunting, it would just be a waste to me. Check through the main sites online and see if they have any deals going.

If you want to try them out first, buy them off of Sportsman Guide or Cabelas... They take back the gear no questions asked. Cabelas has a 30 day limit on returns and unlimited through Sportsman Guide. I've ordered through both just to try out different models and see for myself if they'd work for me. If I didn't like them, they went back... No money lost, and I made sure I liked what I was keeping... Win/Win for me!

I haven't used any digital scopes so I can't comment on them. Sorry...
