exposure at sunset

Is it possible to have a properly exposed sunset and properly exposed people in front of the sunset? I tried taking some sunset pictures and the people were really dark in front of it. when i did the spot metering on the faces the sunset was overexposed and you could not see the sunset very well. Any suggestions?

Try a little fill flash

Fill flash or filters (graduated neutral density) would be about the only way.

Try a little fill flash

And/or a reflector. Take exposure reading to the side of the sun, not directly at it.

Or if your flash battery is dead, then you can try an HDR blend.
