Default LEO out in full force Liberty Hill to Briggs on 183

Anyone know why they have 8-10 (or more) LEO's from Liberty Hill to Briggs on 183? I saw them yesterday and then today. Writing tickets as fast as they could (I assume as they had people pulled over).

A usual trip to Lampasas I see maybe one with no one pulled over. They had at lest 3-4 motorcycle LEO's, then the standard SUV, car, and Sherriff vehicles.

They changed the speed limit to 65 in that stretch so now their out in force to enforce it. Been like that for about a week. Lot of accidents ( they say 300+)
I travel that road from Briggs to Cedar Park nearly daily for 17 years and only come across 2 accidents so not sure when the accidents are happening.

I use to drive that way 7 days a week and could go months without seeing LEO, every now and then I'd see 15 from Lampasas to Liberty Hill. Never did know why, maybe just keeping people honest...

Wrecks- it was one of the areas the Feds listed as hazardous. Dropped speed limit, now working traffic so they don’t get funding pulled. I think it’s part of the Vision Zero the Feds put out. Area on 183 south of 29 to 3405 I think

They added a left turn lane which took away a lane going either direction so you go from 2 lanes to one lane back to 2. I think it is more dangerous now than it was. They lowered the speed limit but that don't matter no one slows down. I have actually been passed on the left as people ignore that it is one lane and the other lane is a turn lane. Probably has a lot to do with the LEO's out in force.

You driving rush hours? I drive that way and back once per week. I almost never see people speeding more than 5 over. But I drive 10am-noon.

Was on the news this week. Wilco handed out 150 speeding tickets on 183 in Leander/LH area on Monday alone. Big initiative to slow down drivers. They even used a fake cop car made from cardboard.

If you ask me, speeding is NOT the problem. It's people who don't know how to drive, and people who are playing with their cell phones.

What is wierd is the lowered the speed limit from New hope to Seward junction to 60 mph. but that stretch has over 100 yards of medium between roads. But the stretch from seward junction to 3405 is 65 and there is no seperation. just a yellow line. Not sure how that is safer..

The wreck that killed people 3 weeks ago was north of 3405 so not even in that stretch. Not making sense.. I drive this dailey and have never seen a wreck. My guess is that maybe some crossings that dont have lights are having collisions.. Not sure.. Never seen 300 plus wrecks..

I’ll check when I go back to work but I think that roadway got negative marks from TXDOT- They use a bunch of factors and wrecks is the most important. Bad stretch of toad. Those that don’t see accidents there are lucky. I’ve witnessed a fatal at 29 and stopped at one about 1/2 mike away about a year ago

There was something in the paper about them going to be writing tickets on N 183 all the way into Cedar Park this week too. That big undivided hill going down to 3405 gets scary. All that work and no turn lane was dumb...

Oh, they already got the big crack head dealers a few weeks ago on CR 207 just off 183. It's because of so many wrecks in this stretch. I drive it several times a day and it does get bad at times.

Hard to not be negative when it happens like this. Money drives everything.

Plus I can take a LEO by the hand straight to 10+ people that have warrants. One has 10+ felony convictions AND after skipping rehab per judge orders. She had to choose rehab or jail. Went to rehab and just walked out the next day LOL They know where she lives but leave her alone as she has zero money. So what's the point in convicting her again? Only when someone complains I guess...

But the people heading to work have money so write them tickets.

But I do understand none of this is the officers fault. They don't create the rules.

So now we are bitching about Leo's doing their job? Seems like some just have to find something negative in everything.
News said they clocked another doing 99 in the 60 zone.

You guys crack me up. It’s all about $$$. I worked highway for years and never got a cent for a ticket. $$$$ to police is tax dollars. Sure every department has a certain percentage of officers that work traffic. I work on the lake and when I see a kid no wearing a PFD I should ignore it and look for a crackhead? Or just wait and fire up the sonar and find the kid taking a nap on the bottom of the lake and go wake him up with the dive team?

This situation has to do with people dying on this stretch of highway.

First off I'm not bitching about LEOs. And I don't complain when speeders get pulled over, usually.

So if this stretch is so bad what caused this sudden full force 15x manpower push to make it safe exactly? There was a trigger and I bet it links to money or funding of some sort. Even if it doesn't link to money it makes no sense because the road hasn't changed. Did the Chief wake up last week and say oh crap! we better make 183 safe next week? It's been the same road for 15 years.

The point on crack/meth heads is we know and live by them. And Glen I know you know this also. It's not any officers fault. It's no different than border patrol catching the same illegal every week and knowing their name after taking them in 10 times. The only difference is that's BP's only job so they just repeat it over and over. LEO's have other aspects of safety and laws to enforce. The irk is why even issue a warrant or 5 when you know where they live if there's no one to bring them back in?

Drive that stretch of road every month heading to the panhandle.
Most dangerous part of the 400 miles.
I'm usually pulling a trailer, glad TxDOT and local LEO's are trying to make it safer.
But the improvements didn't seem to help.

I did not slow down. But that's because I'm a slow old driver And they still won't let me in the GOF club

I understand your point. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to ignore the problem for a decade and then hammer it hard. Do they do this on a regular basis to this extreme?

Yep. We do it on a weekly basis. Send 6-10 officers to small specific area and do nothing but work traffic. It’s a fairly new philosopjy in LE. Find out traffic hot spots and saturate them

People dying on this stretch of highway may be in small part caused by speeding. However, I would wager a shiny penny that many more accidents are caused by people who don't know how to drive and people who are on their phones. I would like to see more laws enforced besides the speed limit.

35. I agree as well. These are set up for visibility more than anything. People see people pulled over they in theory drive better. I went to a big class about it with all kinds of stats. I have no idea if they are seeing the success they want- That stretch of road is bad. I drive it daily at all times. Just be careful when you are I. The area is all I can say

I live in LH and work in Pflugerville. I’ve been known for driving a little faster then I should. Luckily the Fuz hasn’t got me yet.. I usually just follow all the Round Rock cops and TCSO on their way to and from work. Their faster then me.. we have a ton of K9 officers down cr200 that haul tail going to training.

There was another fatal accident this morning on this stretch of road. It appears it was a single vehicle accident but, none the less it's a dangerous spot. I live in LH off this same highway and there's been several vehicle related deaths on this road. Be careful out there

There is nothing about the road that is dangerous, it's the people driving on it. They are driving too fast or too distracted. I drive this stretch multiple times a day and have never had a problem.

it is about as simpliest stretch of road to drive. from seward juctuon to new hope it is seperated and pretty darn strait. problem is probably the crossings out of a couple neighborhoods.

Doesn't matter if it's 5, 10, 20 over or even driving the speed limit, if people are texting while driving accidents will happen. At higher speeds vehicle accidents=fatalities. Banning phones and cars should be on the liberal agenda in no time.

Glen, what lake do you patrol?? Are you folks out there primarily to enforce safety type stuff?? Thanks for what you do and stay safe out there!!

4 fatalities in a week between 3405 and Fm 970. I live in the area and am glad they're hammering the traffic. The fatalities are only half the story. There are numerous serious injury collisions no one ever hears about. This area is far south of the Briggs 2 lanes to 1 lane debacle so not a factor. If you lived near this y'all would be praising the proactive efforts. Further if the Police are stopping cars they're also stopping the local meth heads along with the soccer moms so no complaints from me there.

Pedernal. I work the water within Austin. Decker, Ladybird, Austin- great job until I’m retired. 90% of our enforcement is safety. Hazardous operation and wake zone violations being the 2 major stops- Every stop we do a full safety inspection on the boat
