Assault Weapons Ban Poll

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I keep seeing these articles that say "79% of Americans polled support a assault weapons ban" (even wiki has these stats).

I personally have never been involved, been invited to participate, or even seen one of these polls taking live votes. I'm wondering if anyone here ever has either?? Are these biased polls being conducted in LA California??
