    Best wood for closet shelving?

I'm going to build shelves for my wife in our closet. What wood is best for this? I've heard Cedar, but I would imagine that would probably also be the most expensive option. I haven't priced anything yet though. Would Oak be better? Or could Pine work?

    Thanks for the input.

If you aren't going for "Showroom" just want to store sweaters, you can get the melamine shelf board inexpensive sometimes. You can also get an MDF type board 12" width pretty cheap, and just paint it.

It really just depends on if you are worried about showing it off or not.

Pine would be fine are you painting or staining it?

Isn't cedar a moth repellant might be the way to go

This. I did mine in cedar and love it. Was a bit pricey though.

Haven't decided on this yet. Probably paint if going with pine, but if I went with oak just a stain and poly coat. Not sure if I'd do anything on Cedar though.

Did you leave the cedar natural or did you stain it or varnish it?

                Varnished cedar looks good

                  3/4" Birch cabinet grade plywood.

I had 5 closets to do. The first one in my mud room I stained. It turned out real nice, but I thought it took too long. Ready to be finished with the house, and get on with my life, I just painted the rest.

Also, I made all mine 14" wide. Really like the deeper cubby holes. Makes all the difference IMO. Look into a pocket hold jig aswell, to hide the screws where you have to use them.
