I'm gettin my severance check from the army in a couple weeks and I'm gonna go get me a 9mm finally. Just curious as to what you guys recommend. I'm leanin really hard towards a glock 17 or 19. Maybe even a 1911 in 9mm. Definitely not wanting a compact full size only. Suggestions?

Do yourself a favor and check them out before settling on a Glock.

Some (not all) of them have a scratchy trigger out of the box. If those plastic triggers don't have the burs or rough edges taken off of them they might feel rough at first. I don't know if the "pro" series does anything extra to them at the factory.
Shooting a few boxes out of them or dry firing smooths them out fairly quickly, for those that might need it.

I like the trigger reset better on the Glock. I like the grip better on the M&P and the M&P has less muzzle flip on the shot.
YMMV

Ive had my G17 gen 4 for awhile now, and after several thousand rounds I have been so so very impressed, I have had 1 fte with some cheapo steel monarch and that's it, the other 1,999 rounds went till the mag was dry. and I have to say the gun feels better now than it ever did. cycles everything from 115-147gr cheap/expensive doesn't matter. I doubt id ever buy anything else except maybe an M&P pro series I really liked the ergonomics of that particular model.

I don't know what your service pistol was, my Marine buddy used a Beretta M9A1 which is the military name for the 92A1. I have 0 complaints with my A1 and haven't shot a better shooting 9mm, it looks good, feels great in your hand, and shoots straight as can be. I would definitely look into them, as they aren't too expensive either.
