Default Costal skinny water chariot overhaul

I have been wanting a scooter style flats boat for a while now. When I saw this setting on the side of the road it was love at first sight and for the price I couldn't pass it up. She is rock solid but in need of a cosmetic make over and of course I have plans of completely going overboard with upgrades.....so here we start with a 16' majek, texas skiff.

First thing to tackle. The dreaded sanding. Many, many hours of sanding..... the starboard side was really beat up and I figured it would cost me a fortune to smooth it out. I tried to get decent pics but white scratches in white gel coat just wouldn't show up. I was pleasantly surprised to see most of the scratches sand out you can really see the difference in the old stuff and freshly sanded stuff.

I marked everything that needed filler added to it. Instructions said filler must be used above 60 degrees. Science it's 100 today I figured I was good to go. Down side is that the 10 min cure time was cut in half so I had to work fast. Sadly this also translates to sloppy..... so more sanding than already planned....

Not a good picture of the boat, but this was my Papaw's we used for 20+ years. Hopefully yours will bring you as many good memories when it's done, both fixing it up and using it.

Yes sir merc!!!!!! I certainly hope so. I have 3boys and they enjoyed removing old hardware and trailer parts that were in the way. They did it all by themselves too.

Long evening and I know the pictures aren't that exciting.....but, it is rough sanded and as blemish free as I can get it. I'm very pleased at this point.

Looking good. I have one sitting out back that I started a rebuild thread on 4 months ago but the summer heat got in the way so I postponed it.

Hows the transom?? Solid, before you start cosmetic work on it?? That being said, you put a 60 class motor on that thing and it will be sweet.

Are you wet sanding it or dry? I know on an old boat I had that was oxidized bad from the sun I wet sanded it all the way up to 1200 grit and put a good wax on it and it shined like new. If I did it again I would probably do the same but then at the end, use a plastic polish made for cars to do the final shine on it .

Transom is solid. I made sure of that before I bought it.

There was no kind of oxidation, at least that I could tell. Scratches and chips are the only real issues I'm dealing with. Everything I have seen in YouTube was dry sanded so that's the route I was taking. A fine wet sand and polish do sound good though. I want it to shine!

I may look into a canopy. That could make it a little less miserable.

I decided to spare y'all another photo of a sanded boat. I'm sanding the first 5 feet from the bow down to the underside. The flat bottom of the boat will get a special super slick paint at a later date

I dare say it's as slick and blemish free as the day she left the majek factory. Her former glory is one step closer to being restored.

That was my tea cup. It's hard to keep a drink in a cloud of dust! I've been throwing the beer bottles in the boat.

Best I can tell I've had that little sander for about 17 years. This boat was the death of it.

Harvey really put the breaks on! After losing time to rain I'm now dealing with our place on the coast. I will plan to hit it hard next week though.

I did make my mandatory 2nd trip to the Tpw office. First trip the lady made a hand written list of the things I needed to do and gave me her card. This trip I was still missing stuff that was NOT on the list...... now I have to make a 3rd trip.

This has to be the most boring diy! It's coming along though.
