No luck on the pronghorn or any of the exotics, but I did draw the Choke Canyon Archery Deer tag in January. I love the Three Rivers/Tilden area to hunt. Still have a few gun hunts to wait for, but my year is pretty full with hunts here at home. Congrats to everyone who gets the permit they have been waiting on.

No matter how many hunts you put in for seems to be going on a 5 year rolling average between draws now with the new online system, old system had ALOT better odds.

For the national wildlife refuge hunts I wish it was the way it used to be. They were not on this system. There were 600 slots and it was first come first serve. You could put in for it via mail or in person.

I drew gun deer antlerless/spike at Fort Boggy so far. I drew the archery hunt there last year. It's a cool place to hunt.

I agree with you, we don't put in for any of the NWR's except for H and thank God its not in this system. Wish they would take granger out as well, needs to be if you want a chance at a permit show up for the lotto on Sept. 29th shortly to be followed by orientation. You would separate the posers from the hard core guys... all the snowflakes these days want their permits easy-peasy on a silver platter.

I put in for more than I ever did.
Maxed out loyalty points in Archery mule deer and me and my Council, ID buddy got AMD at Black Gap WMA. My third draw in 12 years of doing this thing. Bought my permit to go today. Gonna be a hard hunt. Still have many gun hunts to wait on.

Congrats on drawing Chaparral, I drew that one last year. Did not kill a deer but that is an amazing ranch. I have not heard anything good about Gus Engeling though, so if I had to pick between any of them I would cancel that one .

I plan on attending all 3, plus whatever else I get drawn on for NWRs and Gun hunts. The winky face makes me sense a bit of sarcasm about Gus Engeling. I'll have to get to researching it

I got drawn for AMD (Oct) at Black Gap, as well. Are you Oct. or Nov? I'm really excited- tough hunt but awesome country and we caught a good moon this year. Talked to Will, the biologist out there on Monday, and he said good late rains have range conditions in good shape but going to make hunting guzzlers tougher. The good news is deer herd is in great shape (antlers and body size) and numbers are up over the past few years. Would love to talk to someone who has done this hunt in the past year or two. Will said deer have been shot with bows the past few years, so it is doable.

What does this mean?

Good luck at Black Gap. That's an awesome place with beautiful, remote, and rough country.

Results are in for me..... Didn't get selected for James Daughtrey, Chaparral, Choke Canyon, Government Canyon or Las Palomas. Still pending others. Push comes to shove if I don't selected for anything, I will just have to make trips to Amistad more often.

I got drawn on 2nd chance for the gun-antlerless/spike Lake Brownwood hunt in December. Looks interesting but success rate is only about 30% which means of the 12 only 4 will get deer. Will see.

I too am not a fan of the NWR being in the draws now did Balcones before in system and now can't get back on it for nothing.

Did get out to the Lake Waco draw Saturday and the rain did keep the s of lakes home. 109 permits holders showed up for 110 spots. Last year with nice weather was probably 180 people for 116 spots.

Wish everyone the best of luck with the remainder of draws you have in and on your seasons.

RG how is it out there? Been wanting to take a week and make the drive and try it out there. But if going to do it better get it done this last year and season I'm here.

I have been putting in and doing these hunts since the early 90's. I have been drawn on a lot of hunts during these years. When I pick and choose the places I want to put in, I don't even factor in the success rate. To me, all that means, is that hunt had people who either didn't know how to hunt, couldn't shoot, or decided not to shoot.
So, if you factor in the success rate when you apply for these hunts, you are messing up. Out of all the hunts I went on, there was only one hunt where I didn't see a thing. Think there was only one or 2 deer killed on that hunt, where the year before, my brother ended up killing 3 out of the stand he was in.

Sqiggy.. Good information and I hadn't even looked at the success rate until after I was drawn for it.. It would be nice for analysis purposes to see success rates going back 10 years, but do have a good point that the people drawn and where they are put do play a big part in the success of the hunt.
Thanks

What I don't understand is the hunters that get drawn for the hunts and then only hunt the morning and evening, I hunt all day and see deer all day a lot of the time, not always legal to shoot deer but if a legal deer shows I try to take it. Some of these hunts only give you 1 full day of hunting.

FYI cancellation of that atlanta state park hunt is a possibility every year, been canelled the last two. Kinda sorry they keep taking entry fees for it...

Quote:
Dear Public Hunter,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Youth Deer Either Sex hunt scheduled for Jan. 14-16, 2017 has been cancelled. Loyalty Points will be restored for all confirmed youth hunters.

Because of recent flooding at Wright Patman lake, the United State Army Corp of Engineers has decided to conduct an extensive logging operation within the boundaries of Atlanta State Park. The United State Army Corp of Engineers has estimated that near 90% of the Shortleaf Pines inundated by the flood are now infested with pine beetles or other invertebrates and will die within the calendar year. Unfortunately this logging operation will extensively if not completely affect the hunt area on the Park.

TPWD’s Public Hunting Program apologies for any inconvenience or hardship these cancellations may cause. You can reach the Public Hunting Program Mon-Fri. 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at 800/792-1112, menu 5 or 512/389-4505.
