As far as ground blinds go, their deadly (in a good way). I see nothing wrong with them. I personally use a climber, but I've seen the results of a ground blind, and their really good. Probably a little more unsafe than a climber, but still good.

We should get together one day and cook or something. I have a pile of ducks , someone bring the sausage and I will make a gumbo.

Neighbor of mine was hunting near Ragtown on Saturday. He said about 6:30am someone came walking through the woods sounding like bull. He stopped about 30 yards from the tree he had climbed, took a leak then continued on his way. Said there was trucks parked everywhere. He didn't stay long. Said he'd go back in a week or two after things quiet down.

That sucks. I'm heading back up on Thursday by myself for the cold front that's moving in. It's crazy how different areas work up there on SNF ,until last year I've never even been checked by the GW. Same one checked me this year too.He was at the truck as I was dragging the hog up.

Dang Marshman. Sorry to hear. If you are bowhunting, maybe you can get down to newton public hunting unit and get 2 does, not that it would be easy, but you can shoot them the whole season.

Yea, that is my plan now, to mainly hunt the Type II tract near Newton. I may hit the Moore during the late muzzleloader season.

I have been hunting the public land in Newton so far this year. I will be doing a couple of hunts on Sabine National Forest this weekend.

In Newton I got busted Sunday morning by this buck. I slacked bad when I put the stand in a red oak because it was a lot easier than the water oak that was 5 yards deep in a yaupon tangle. I paid the price for that mistake.

Tuesday evening I let a button buck walk, and this evening I let a big mama doe and her fawn walk, at 8 yards. They never busted me, though they walked across my trail in.

I am hoping the acorns are falling in some of my favorite hardwood bottoms on the SNF and the Moore Plantation. I am gonna just pop into a couple of the spots for blind hunts, places that always have a buck or two. Then there will be a few power scouts, into the past hotspots, check the sign discretely, low profile - midday, with scent control, and back out.

Anyone hunt off 201? I live in Brookeland and have wanted to give it a try but not sure where to go or where boundaries for the forest and leases in the area.

Went out that way Friday on the way to 6 mile and saw a good buck right after we turned onto 3243.

I went on a power scout during the midday on Sunday, a week ago, in the six mile bottom area. Noticed that there was a good many scrapes, but found only one decent rub, something a 3 1/2 year old buck might make.

It was pretty hot, and I was not hunting, so I was not wearing my orange. As I worked my way back to the truck and was still about 200 yards from the road, I looked to my right and saw someone, I figured another hunter so I waved and kept on to the road.

Thirty seconds later I looked to the right again and see this guy headed my way. Turns out it was the forest ranger and he had came into the woods after me! Well, I got a warning from him on the orange deal. If you are doing anything hunting related, though not hunting itself, you gotta have the orange.

Oh well, he was a nice enough fellow and we had some good conversation. I just could not believe he barged right into the woods to hunt me down. If I was hunting, orange and all, and this happened and he ruined the hunt, I would have been P.O.'d but I guess there's nothing I could do. Any one have this happen to them?

Ummm, the book says "hunting", not "hunting related". Were you carrying a weapon?

If you weren't carrying a weapon, how does he know you weren't hiking?

I know that the use of hunter is encouraged and recomended, even for hikers. However, it isn't required when your scouting/hiking.

No weapon but a machete. Got to protect myself from chupacabra's and black planthers. No, he just barged into the woods to find me. Still had his vehicle running when we got out to the road.
