Rucking (Ruck Marching)

    Couple of more loops from the house this week. All part of the plan to hit this particular loop 3x/week with increasingly longer rucks on Sunday. the ruck on the 31st was at 20# and yesterday's was at 30#. Yesterday's was solo, hence the quicker speed. Plan on 14 on Sunday with a lot of elevation change mixed in.

        Mark what pace do y’all work toward when you do a ruck like Bataan? I want to try Bataan this next spring.

            Normally try to keep around a 18:00/mile pace while moving. Or, 3 miles an hour. Here’s my stats from this year.

              I'm on the cusp of 18 on the level sand of the Bosque. Pretty far off when im on the rocks in the hills. Gives me something to work toward. Thanks.

                Other than just grab a pack and start walking, any advice to someone who wants to get started doing this? What are good entry packs, etc?

                  First thing I’d invest in is a fitted pair of boots/shoes. You get blisters and you’re not going far. As far as a pack, all depends what you’re gonna do with it. I ruck a GORUCK GR1. Very minimalist, like a military “assault” pack. Others in my group use Osprey. Mine is just for weight over distance, so it works for my needs.

                    I have been just using a vest (45 pounds). When I go further than a five k I just use my hunting day pack to haul some minor gear and whatever weight to get it up to 20-25 pounds.
                    I walk in the rocks with trail shoes to build up my ankles. You don’t need to spend a bunch. Use what you have and just start walking.

                      Nice and humid out there today. Handy hint, don’t eat a mess of Frito pie the night before a longish ruck lest you get told to get 30 meters behind everyone and stay there.

                        With this heat, maybe a good time to put in long evening ruck... I mean, 8 of your 20 rucking hours will be at night....
