You kind of are. First, it was dark and would have been a straight on head shot at a moving target. Second, he never charged me so clearly I didn't have to shoot him with my bow.

You can mock or second guess me, but having made it back safely I have no regrets to the way I handled, short of not being better equipped and prepared.

That would be a concerning time for sure... Carry a rifle with you and shoot that hog in the face!!

Have gun, will travel... Need to brake in the 45-70!!

I think you're right. I couldn't hit a hog in the face with a pistol at 10 yards. If I'm going to carry a gun out there, it might as well be a rifle. I have an old .444 Marlin that does pretty good on hogs.

I try to get them to chase me. Even have caught piglets off a sow and put them in my pockets. Every step a squeal. Lol. They run in Texas unless cornered or wounded!

No doubt. We did that at Grainger once, everyone had a squealer in their backpack trying to get momma to come looking for them, momma hauled arse!

OP, can't blame you on not taking the show with a bow in that situation.

I do think if this would have happened to me, I'd be purchasing thermal for my rifle. Pay what ever license fee required in OK, and have a night time operation to rid the place of hogs.

And now going forward, I'm thinking when I need to carry the sidearm.

You can kill hogs any time of the year in Oklahoma. However, during hunting season, it is not legal to hunt hogs at night. Although landowners can get some kind of exemption.
