i have never dug for points, but i have enjoyed my surface time as much as almost anything else i have ever done. this thread reminds me that there are an almost unlimited supply of points/tools to be found here, there and every where. if you find a place where the necessities of life were available, you will find amerind activity and the evidence thereof. there are plenty of areas where it isn't so obvious today as the springs and creeks may have dried up or been altered thru modern activities. searching for lost water sources is a great way to find close by artifacts for suburban as well as rural searchers.

garguy, you have discovered the wellspring of life, and you have been rewarded. your life needs to be made an example for us all. you won't be wishing you had spent more time at work, when st peter asks you what you might have done differently during your short days here. good luck in this and all your endeavors.

Have you ever dug any Blackland Gumbo land? We have a place in Kaufman Co, thick black clay, it is overlooking a creek draining into the east fork of the Trinity. I may have to start some digging to see if there are any artifacts on our hill. I am guessing I will have to water screen though, because of the clay, any thoughts?

As others have said, great testimony, Gar Guy. I wish you the very best of luck with this dig. Those Wells are nice, but I'm anxious to see some giant Scottsbluffs you pull out of there!

Keep up the great work!

Never tried digging for artifacts before, but I will now.

I think someone here needs to donate their ranch in the hill country for a TBH artifact dig.

Well its a holiday and we have a ton of stuff going on. Lots of veterans in my family that have gone on before us. I did have to put a new belt on the sifter and really needed to finish my drainage cut so we decided to run up there and get that done. Had to find a belt asd the one I had was wrong and didnt get started till 10. I started digging my cut and figured i might as well see what was in it. I got way down toward the creek and hit a nice flat spot that looked unnatural. I noticed it the other day when I was clearing the woods off it.

I told dad I wanted to dig a couple of buckets and see if there was anything in it. I put a bucket in the sifter and went to get another. when i came back, dad had 2 arrowheads in his mouth and one in his hand! That spot was full of stuff! Long story but it turned out to be five feet deep and a big spot! Most of the stuff was sorry material but we found about 60 points in 2 hours.

I did find a damaged paleo point and a rough Scotts bluff. Kinda rare to see a Scotty made of poor petrified wood but the median ridge and heavy basal grinding confirm it. One edge is broken off. Also found a cool Catahoula arrow point. I cant wait to get back. Probably late monday.

Yes I have dug black gumbo in the Trinity bottom. When it is just the right texture, it sifts fine. Otherwise it is either too hard to dig or too gummy to sift. Now that being said, most really good sites in blachland have sand from the indians leveling floors in lodges. Chances are if you have a site you can see a much lighter dirt and it maynsift fine.

Here is a quick story from yesterday. I was coming out of my hole with a bucket of dirt and there was a lady standing right in my way. I had to stop to keep from running over her. I killed the loader and she asked if I was building a "parking lot" ! LOL! Who the heck would build a parking lot there! I looked North and saw a sports car that she had driven right past all my posted signs and right out into all that loose sand.

I assured her I wasnt building a parking lot and she said ,"Well i see you are doing all this construction and I just wanted to tell you my uncle told me this is an ancient Indian site and you cant build here!" I told her I was well aware of that fact and I would continue with my project.

She again expressed her concern and asked what it was we were doing. I told her I appreciated her concern but i would continue to do whatever i wanted on my own property! She just stood there untill I started the tractor up. She got turned around and drove out without getting stuck. Dont have a clue who she was.

According to history and my ancestors all of America was an ancient Indian site but that never stopped progress before now has it. I guess something got in the way of the old biddy learning to read too. Keep upthe work I am ever more envious of what you are finding.

You gotta keep an eye on folks like that. I see you are right near a bridge where people can drive right by and see what is going on. She will obviously spread the word and you might start having a problem with potlickers coming in at night and trying to find a few. That happens on the ranch we dig at in the hill country.

LOL! i swear i half expect that. Someone mentioned a reality show earlier. I had a production company contact me about that. Follow me for a full year doing alligaotr hunts, Bowfishing for gator gar, Commercial fishing longnose, Rod reel fishing gator gar, digging artifacts, and hog hunting. I pulled the plug on it because i figured If we put this out there in the national spotlight someone would be pushing a FEDERAL law against digging. many states already have one.

If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, a "registered" ancient site may not be dug, but if your site isn't "registered" and it's your property, you can do whatever you want.
Great thread, thanks

I didnt really have time but I ran out there and dug a little today. Im still working on the hole that was meant to be drainage and havent even started on the heart of the site. I found a little stuff. Couple of killer brokes. I found a base and a little later found ba point that looked like a match, I washed em up and tried them but it was different material. Both would have been awesome points!

Dad says we are digging on the wrong side of the tracks....over where the po folk Indians lived. The material is weak and lots of brokes but I plan to sift every yard of it anyway!

Yeah and broke at the same angle, same thickness, etc.. I had trhe base in a can of water so I ran over there and washed em both. It looked like the same material when it was dirty. Great work on both.
