I sure like it. Interesting story about it. I was running the skid steer hauling dirt to the screen. My wall caved off and it took ten buckets or so to clean it up. In the freshly exposed wall, i saw the shape of an arrowhead pointing straight down. I cleaned the dirt up and started back in a new direction but I looked at that odd shape every time I drove past.

Finally , I stopped the skid steer and punched it with my finger. Low and behold,, it was that fine Marcos just inside the wall with only the highest parts exposed but enough to show the outline of the point.

beautiful pieces Steve, what material is that triangular point made from? I have some points made from similar shiny material that the maker left tags on when flaking much like the ones left on that point

Maybe that red color was from some heat treatment either accidentally or on purpose. Stones used in middens changed color and became glassy and were much easier to knapp. I even use heat treating on some stuff but I use an electric roaster and play sand. After all I am playing
There are several old middens out on my deer lease in Sterling County that I have collected rock from to make points. Most of it looks real close to that Marcos.

Do you have a couple pieces of paleo there in your hand with all the smaller points? I see 2 that look like parts of points I have found.

I'm going to post this picture here so I don't lose it (which I did but luckily wife had it on her phone). This is Garguy mentoring Colton when Garguy stopped by for a visit last summer while Colton and I were sifting in his creek. This pictures speaks volumes...

Such a cool picture Johnny. It really speaks volumes. Master teacher and his student.

I hope your son continues the passion as you have taught him. I'm seeing it more and more in my sons as we hunt for and find artifacts from time to time.

Actually, we started a new dig with Justin, Southerncamo and found thousands upon thousands of fine artifacts last year! Johnny dug with us a lot as well.

We did several hunts at this excavation as well and Johnny and Justin both scored a lot of artifacts!

Those are sure some pretty points there Southerncamo. The knapper used very high quality flint and much of it looks to be heat treated. Just beautiful.

Are y'all finding all of this on the river or perhaps on a high point nearby? Some years ago we drilled a well in Parker County on property that went to the Brazos. I found a camp on a high bluff overlooking the river with great views. Unfortunately for me someone had already worked it pretty good and there wasn't much left except for chips and a busted mano.

Garguy I have some promising sites to dig, but haven't had time yet. Really need to build a mechanized sifter. One area is a mound along a creek. There may actually be more than one. I didn't see this one until after mowing down the vegetation late this past fall. I've been told that flint has been found near this creek.

Lots of poor material there but the paleo folks imported good rock so if you have an older site here may be some good stuff.

We have a family place in OK and in about a 20 yard stretch that is a road heading down to one of our creek crossings i have found 6 arrowheads on the surface. Tons of flakes and everytime it rains i can't wait to get back. Would this be a locations to start digging? It would would be all hand equipment but I've been thinking about getting some shovels, buckets, and sifter and spend a few days in that location.
Would most of the points just be ones that have been washed down over the years?

It will likely be a mix of thousands of years of occupation if its a high spot near running water. Should be a great place to dig. Look at the spot and pick where you would set your tent if you was planning to camp there long term and get water from the stream. Thats the place to start.

You might want to check OK laws. It is illegal to dig there...

Definately 14000 plus. thats pretty well proven at this point. Likely much longer. i believe there have been some solid carbon dates at 17,000 plus now as well although there is still disagreement on much of that.

What is the triangular shaped piece? Top row, right center. To the left of the long narrow black point? Pottery shard?

I want to buy a day with you to look for some heads with my Dad. He is fascinated by indian artifacts and we don't find many at all down in Tilden. Probably because we don't know what we are doing but your ability to find them is pretty incredible. Love you and Johnny's posts about them.

Hmm, interesting. I would have never guessed that. To my untrained eye the edges do not appear to be worked.
