    The best way to learn, in my humble opinion is to take photos in the dark, take photos of light bulbs, take photos of moving ceiling fans, take photos of distant wildlife, etc... each of the extremes (light motion distance). Take a few photos, then take a photo using auto. Compare your photos and the settings used to that of the auto mode and see what you like....

    Don't be scared to go outside of normal settings. For example this photo, although a train-wreck, turned out kinda cool....
