I'm amazed those 2 feeders are still standing! You got some wuss auodad!! Those legs should be ripped off and the barrels torn up by now.

Landowner texted me yesterday and said he had just got a little over 2" of rain out of a storm that went through. That's good news. It's been dry lately. Good chances of rain next week as well. That's good for our axis. They had kinda moved out of our ranch during the dry spell the last couple of months. Some of the neighbors had gotten more of the little pop up showers than we did, so the grass was greener on the other side of the fence for a while. They are coming back on us again now. This latest rain will make sure they stay hopefully.

I noticed on the cameras we got some rain. Not enough to make mud but enough to settle the dust. I think our axis are easier to hunt when it's dry.

Went out last weekend and got all the feeders filled, saw probably close to 75 axis but no real monsters. Very dry out there could use a good rain for sure.

We made a trip out there this past weekend and man it's dry. Hopefully we received some of that rain that Shane is talking about. We had a good time getting everything ready, but I'm only seeing young bucks. This guy is the only one I've seen with any age on him. Either way I'm ready to get after them.

I've got a 9 on camera pretty similar to the one in your pic, Brian. It's the biggest buck I've seen on our place so far. Just about every whitetail on our place would be a management deer on every ranch in other parts of the state. The 9 is the only buck I've seen that has more than 8 points. Genetics in our area are just mediocre 8 points, I guess. I'm there for the axis anyway, so no big deal. But I am starting to think about how much fun it will be to take a whitetail. I don't know if I'll shoot the 9 or one of the other mature 8s early or if I'll hold off for the rut and see what else might show up.

When is the peak of the rut, typically, in Sutton County? I'm guessing early December?

Seems like it was more around the 2-3 week of december for us... west of town. Bowslayer may remember better.

We are 30 mins south of town and ours usually begins in early December and run through January. Peak is usually mid month, sometimes we don't see it hot and heavy until after Christmas.

Had Kendall Jones out filming an Aoudad hunt today with another young lady. The other girl connected on a nice Ram from my stand. I'm sure Kendall will get hers tomorrow.

Man, it is GREEN up in here. Lots of rain lately. Water standing everywhere. Acorns dropping. Deer can eat and drink anywhere they want to go right now. All the whitetail bucks that were daily regulars at my bow setups all summer disappeared off the cameras when the rain started a few days ago. I've seen some of them in other pastures this weekend when I've been stalking axis with my rifle. Summertime pattern is over.

Seeing lots of axis out and about. Saw a shooter this morning, but only for about 3 seconds. No shot.

Same story at our place. Weather station showed almost 4" of rain last week. Deer sightings were slim to none. Rain is good for the animals, but sure does make it harder on the hunter at our place. The deer at our place do not like the north breeze. I guess they get used to that stiff south breeze that blows the majority of the year.

We saw tons of axis and whitetail. They just ignored the feeders. Not long after I posted the pic above in my popup, I had several of my hit list whitetail bucks at 60-100 yards out grazing, but they didn't even look at the protein feeder. Lots of forbes sprouting up had their attention. Had a group of sika in the pasture as well, but they were 600 yards away, and I didn't have my rifle with me. I couldn't slip out of the popup to go back to my truck to get it because of all the whitetail grazing between me and the sika. Had a really nice sika buck in the group that I would have LOVED to take. I went back to that spot Sunday morning with my rifle, hoping to see the sika again. They weren't there. Axis were in that same spot in some trees near the fence. By the time I got to 300 yards, they were still in the trees and started heading to the fence. Too much brush for a shot, and they hopped the fence and were gone before I could get into a position for a shot at the big buck that was with them.

Seeing them isn't a problem. Getting a shot at them.... that's a different story.

Also, Saturday night as we were sitting near the gate about to leave, a truck came slow rolling down the road and was spotlighting into our pasture. We turned on our headlights and headed for the gate and up the road. I reached for my cell phone to call the game warden, and my phone wasn't in my pocket. I'd left it on the bed cover of my truck. I had to stop to get it before I lost it. Poacher got away before I could get a visual on the truck or license plate. ****** me off.

Hate to hear about the poachers. We did find a carcass of a dead axis doe. I'm guessing one of the neighbors shot her with a rifle and didn't find her. We are about a little over a mile off the road so we don't have any problems with poachers that I know of.

Call the game warden anyway. Let them know where and what time. They will keep an eye out and might could even put out a decoy and catch them.

My daughter got her first deer ever last weekend, using mommas crossbow. It was an exciting hunt and we had to literally wait 20 minutes or so before she could get a shot at him. I think she went through buck fever 5 times in those 20+ minutes . Her Daddy had it too. I got it on video and am having a shoulder mount done since it's her first deer.

We saw a lot of deer feeding at night. Stopped hunting feeders and focused on water holes and oaks and saw more action during the day. We need some cold weather!!

Just a heads up for anyone hunting down Harrell road we have found a couple road hunted deer just shot and left out for the buzzards on our places. GW thinks it might be kids joy riding.

I've never hunted in an area with a bigger poaching problem. I've never hunted in East Texas, so I don't know if it's worse there or not. But it's ridiculous in Sutton County. GW thinks the problem around our lease is some hunters from the Houston area, but he can't prove it. So maybe it is spillover from East Texas? Sounds like the GWs are gonna step up their efforts to catch them soon though, according to my landowner. I hope they do, and I hope they nail some poachers to the wall.

I met a guy from Comfort about 5 years ago who told me that at one point in time, there was only one game warden that covered the 4 surrounding counties. That is a lot of land for one officer. The guy said you could get away with murder out there. Kids drive through the outskirts of town and shoot deer out of peoples' front yards.

I have hunted in Comfort for years, and can tell you first hand I have seen 10 in the Shell station in Comfort getting coffee. We now have a place in Sonora as well and I have seen 2 in the last couple weeks driving around. Hope they catch these guys pretty soon.
