What kind of pasture grass is this?

Bought some property a while back, took the cows off to let things grow back. This grass is in an old 10 acre field and it is completely different than the surrounding areas. Is this some kind of improved grass, or just native stuff?

If it is an improved grass, what is the best way to help it grow?

Thanks for any help. Location is Central Texas.

Looks like Klein Grass to me.

I think I would mow it high and hit it with some nitrogen fertilizer

Looking at the web, that looks just like it. Many thanks!

Maybe an old-world bluestem, if so, not native (kill it).

I agree it looks like Klein Grass, can you take a close up picture of the seed head? If it is Klein, just fertilize in the spring before a rain, and shred it after it heads out each time (should be a couple of times each summer.) Klein spreads easily and is very drought resistant. Cows typically won't eat much of it unless its early in the spring after it first greens up, after the first hard frost, or unless you bale it. Makes really good cow hay.

Most of the Klein grass I have seen is in improved pastures. NRCS used to recommend using it when you went into a permanent grass program with them. Now they are doing a grass seed mixture.

The shorter stuff look like it might be bermuda of some kind.

If so Bermuda is a very good grass.

                    Klein grass. Toxic to horses

I do not believe that is klein. Looks more like a bluestem. We cut hay that looks just like that and it is not klein. Klein looks kind of similar but has more of a 'johnson' grass type looking seed on top when it seeds out. Hard to explain

Could be KR Bluestem or Wintergrass. I think I can see a seedhead in the picture but not sure.
