It's always a great day in the woods when I got Colton with me. With the temps on the cool side and solid cloud cover, Colton and I made plans to head to our place in Madison County for a long afternoon hunt.
My boy and I right before heading out.
As Colton got in the truck, the boy actually cracked a smile.
It's tradition (since I was a kid) to listen to Marty Robbins the night before a hunt, the drive to the hunt or while in camp. Marty and hunting go hand in hand in our household. We took some back roads to get to our place and while doing so, we were looking for some early signs of the rut. As we were getting close to our property, low and behold...the rut is just around the corner!
Around 3:45 we headed to our stand. We bumped a few deer going in and it was obvious that the deer were already moving. We got to the stand around 4 and started unpacking and organizing our gear. I was in the middle of unpacking my video camera to get it set up when Colton whispered, "A doe is coming in"!! I couldn't see her since she was coming in on my blind side. He kept giving me hand signals on where she was and she finally came into view.
I slowly grabbed my bow as she started nibbling on some corn about 17 yards out. I gave her a minute to settle in, came to full draw and let the buzz cut eat! She took off in some mesquites and then I saw her do a hand stand about 45 yards out and then do a back flip! Talk about a short hunt!
I thanked Colton for being my guide on this hunt and gave him a $20 tip. Now it's time to hunt some bone. Thanks for coming along for the ride. Till next time!!
