    Opinion on long range rifle

I'll try to keep it short...

    I have a remington 700 SS in 7 RUM.

Im thinking of doing two things:

Either sell it and buy a sender, 5r or remington long range in 7mm or 300 wm.

    or

Take the action, buy a barrel and a stock and do a semi-custom?

What do you think would be best?

just buy the rifle you want. I've found most spend more $s building to get what they could've had to begin with and lots of time doing it. None of that matters if you are a gun tinkerer and building your gun is half the fun. That said, when i researched for a long range rifle I landed with the 7-mag. extremely flat trajectory. i zero at 200-yds and i can aim at anything out to 300-yards without adjustment and be in the kill zone.

I thought the 7RUM was a long range gun.

Buy a 5R Gen 2 and be done with it. I have owned 4 and they were all fantastic shooters

Is there something wrong the the rifle you have now that prevents it from shooting "long range"? Do you want to shoot long range or just want a rifle that looks like a long range rig?

                  How does your rifle shoot?

OP - what is your definition of LR , how far do you realistically plan to shoot ?

                      Nothing wrong with the gun.
It has a ss 26" factory barrel.
But its becoming more difficult to find ammo for the RUM.
                      I would like a 7mm or 300wm.

500 yards would be more than enough for me.

The availability of the ammo is something to be concerned about. If you are just looking for a 500yd hunting rifle I would just go with a rebarrel and action trueing in 7mm Remington. Good ammo availability and will kill anything your likely hunt at 500yds. 500yds isn't really considered long range.

Im used to hunting with a recurve, so 500 is waaaaay out there for me.

Spend a few hundred bucks on equipment and start reloading your own. ?
