Default What to do with my Xterra??

I need a little assistance from the Green Screen. I have a 2007 Xterra 4x4 that the transmission just went out in. It's sitting on ~190K miles and overall it is in good condition but paying to get the transmission fixed doesn't make sense (it's my sons car to get back and forth to A&M so I need something safe). Any ideas on what my best option is? It's currently sitting at a Transmission shop in Spring so he will need me to get it out of there ASAP.

I'd buy a transmission from a salvage yard and put it in, in your driveway.
I mean, you are a doctor and all ... it can't be rocket surgery!

Only two options:
cut your losses and try to sell as is or pay to fix it and hope nothing else goes wrong.

No quote at this time. He only ran diagnostics. It is a typical problem that the coolant line breaks and water/glycol from the radiator gets in it. He did find the trans fluid to be milky which suggests that is the culprit. Most likely the cheapest fix is a new/rebuilt transmission. It will drive ok in 1-3 gears but will not go into 4th or O/D. Given that and any other small issues it has, it just isn't worth it for me to fix it. I would hazard about 2K to fix it but that is just a guess.

Anyone in the market for a Yellow 2007 Xterra 4x4 with an outstanding stereo system, stinking brand new tires and a solid engine??

One note...it does have a nifty Texas A&M engineering sticker on it...(Not sure if that helps the sale or not)

Yep, common problem. Youre lucky to get that milage out of it. Usually happens at 80,000. If you fix it go ahead and put a transmission cooler on it and bypass the radiator.

I'm done with it at this point. I am more looking at options of donation or cheap sale to someone that wants to work on it. He needs a car pretty soon as he has summer school and on top of that. rough trade in is around $3K so, for me, replacing the transmission doesn't make sense.

In that condition, I'm guessing $300-500 at a salvage yard. I would pull the stearo system, and swap tire with used cheapos.

Nothing wrong with giving CarMax a shot.

I sold my 2007 Silverado to them. Pulled in on a Saturday morning and was given a quote within half an hour. The quote was good for 7 days. I was blown away to say the least on the figure they provided; which was about $500 less than what I had originally planned to put out on the private party market. Didn't even need to wash or clean it up and the inspection/registration was due the following month. Needless to say, I took the deal.

Granted, there wasn't any major issues with the truck.

Just spend the $2k. You were happy with the car prior to this and it's in good shape otherwise. You won't find a replacement that cheap.

You just answered your original question. I know it sounds strange, but trannies are common place...at least in my experience from a same year Avalanche is when the various computers start to pose problems. When that happens with years and miles, it's a TOTAL $$ drain. Get rid of it IMO.

X2.

Don’t get caught in the whole “cost more to fix than what it’s worth” thing. Those things will run forever aside from that know tranny issue. Vehicles are not investments. They cost a given amount of money per year to operate and their values all go to zero eventually. Spend the $2k, drive it for 5 more years. $400/yr.....a freaking bargain. What are you gonna do when the used vehicle you replace it with also drops the tranny....or head gasket?

I’ll give $1500 for it if Sackett doesn’t want it.

You gonna spend atleast 3 times that much to get something along the same lines of condition. I would replace the tranny and let him go

Just want to be clear with everything. Known issues with the X...AC blows but not cold, one of the O2 sensors is going out. The transmission shop said the computer is working right so that isn’t the issue. Last but not least, the TPMS computer is probably toast. All that being said the car is a good car. Never wrecked, the interior is very good (one small tear on side of drivers seat) and the engine is solid.

I just want to be transparent with this thing.

I've given up on the idea of fixing it. I've decided it is either going to Carmax in a day or two or someone here can buy it. It would cost too much to tow it back to my place or I'd do that and put it up on CL...

Talk to a transmission guy about what it would take to rebuild it and ask if they would like to do it on the side. You can get a re-build kit and they can put it together for a lot cheaper than paying the shop to do it on there time

Well, thanks to those helping out with the decision. I drove it to CarMax Friday and they gave me a good offer so it is going to them this evening. Kinda Bittersweet as I've owned the sucker for 11 years. Time to say goodbye to the banana mobile...
