I had that same thing happen to me years ago while driving on our ranch out west... only thing different is the buck almost cleared the hood of the truck (he came in from the passenger's side), and his rear quarters hit the windshield and pushed it in onto the dash. Only thing that kept us from getting glass/cuts/hurt was an old flannel shirt/coat that was lying on the dash. Deer hit the ground rolled and jumped up and continued to chase the doe that had crossed in front of the truck... I was only going about 15 miles/hour or so too. Scared the... well, I had to drive back to camp with my head stuck out the driver's window so I could see...

When you see a deer come through the windshield it is usually a more low-slung vehicle - they hit the deer head-on and it rolls right up the hood. As tall as pickup is, the deer must have tried to jump over the hood and took a direct hit on the windshield.
