I think by posting pics you will have about 100 extra hunters at Pat Mayse opening day.

Nice bucks.

Good pics man! I'm willing to bet you'll get a lot more. And the great thing about Pat Mayse is the size of the hunting land. Good luck this season

There are a ton of places to hunt at. From previous experience I have not seen a lot of hunters in that area. Although, it could be because I hunted it after Thanksgiving both times. Have seen plenty of does and a few bucks. I also did a little scouting out there last weekend as well. Hoping to do some more within the next couple of weekends but gotta finish out this dreadful summer semester first

did some scouting out there last weekend. Still hotter than hell ha. Topo maps are becoming my best friend for a lot of my scouting right now. I did get a trail camera set up out there so we will see if I have as much luck as you.

Topo is where its at. I am looking forward to the chase this year. In just a few years of hunting public land. I am becoming such a better hunter. I am able to ready sign better than i ever have. I have tripled my knowledge of plants and being able to identify them n the wild. I know i preaching to the choir here about public land but i freaking hooked. Nothing better than getting out and scouting coming across a place that you say to yourself " this seems like a good place for deer" Then setting a trail camera up and actually getting good deer movement captured. Even better when you walk up on 3 does eating in the exact spot you marked as a stand location. I know what everyone is thinking. " Yeah just wait until dove season and the flood of people that will blow all of those deer out of there" To that i say yeah October maybe slow. I still plan on sitting in the stand even if all i see is squirrels and mosquitoes. I will use that stand time to adapt my strategy and move in on bedding and food. I will find does and then i will be in the prime spots for bucks come the rut. I firmly believe hunting public land is all about outlasting and outsmarting humans more than deer. Cant wait to see how everyone does and recap some great hunting stories. 35 sleeps!!

I definitely agree with you. I've only ever hunted public land and it is a struggle for sure. I have had to deal with the crowd before and you are right, you gotta out smart people more than the deer. On private land you may not have that problem but I also feel like it's not as satisfying (wouldn't really know I guess) due to having a big food plot or feeders. Not down talking any of that. If you got the tools than use them. Good luck this fall man. Hope it works out in your favor

Just checked camera last night at pat mayse, Several doe, 3 bucks, 1 is a real big body but couldn't tell much from his rack other than he is tall. A pretty nice clear 8 point and another small 8 that looks to be just under 13 inches. one BIG pig and a fat coyote! wish I had more time in the woods. between work and family it is limited. Publiclandfreaks have you been able to come across those bucks in your cam pics yet?

Seen 2 does and a fawn so far this year. I’ve done about 7 sits in the tree. Shot the second doe I saw. Haven’t seen any bucks in a tree stand yet. Did shoot a pig but wasn’t able to recover him. I’ve seen a good handful of hogs heading out of the woods. Heading out in the AM

I’m hunting WMA. Never looked into hunting the corps land actually. I went out and didn’t see a **** thing unfortunately. So looks like I’ll have to wait until the 9th before I can hunt again due to work and the WNA being closed this weekend. How is the corps land?

Why is the WMA closed - some type of hunt?

Hate when they close it down. It's always during really opportune weekends. Good thing is for this hunt they can only shoot does and un-branched bucks. So the big <13"s get to live to be hunted for the rest of the season.

yeah they have it closed for a draw hunt. its so the rifle people have a chance to get out there and bag a deer..but from the success rate ive seen the majority of them just sit in a tree all day. Think last year there was a 13% success rate

Well this thread has got some age on it but I say we start it back up. Any of you guys started your scouting yet? And did anyone have any success last year? I plan on going out next weekend and doing some scouting and dropping off a couple of trail cameras. Kinda hard to believe we only have a little over 3 months until season opens back up.

If the wife will let me I might try to do some camping out as well. Not sure if it will be opening weekend or not but we will see. Still doing research on the topi maps and trying to get a better grasp at reading them and looking for more promising places instead of wasting time looking at places that aren’t any good. Goal this year is to get a buck. Got a doe last year and that was it, but hell if all I get is another doe I’ll for sure take it.

A doe is definitely a win in my book! Good thing is that my wife didnt grow up around hunters or eating deer meat so the first time she ever had backstrap was thanks to me and now instead of her giving me crap about deer season, she is all about me going out and bringing home some meat lol. I did pick up 3 new game cameras today so I get to add that to the arsenal. Didn't get a chance to go do any scouting this weekend but will be out there next weekend and will be setting up cameras.

I sure do hope so, especially with as much time as I’ve already spent scouting out there. I’m just scouting the WMA land. I’ve seen does, doe beds and a lot of hog sign. Put up my trail cameras and now I’m just waiting on those while scouting other areas.

ANyone else done some scouting out there? I've been checking the trail cameras and I've got some decent bucks on camera and quite a few does. Going to check out a few more spots and I should have a pretty solid plan for this season.

Where is this so I don't stumble on your spot? haha jk. I have a decent spot on WMA I might head back too this season. Not sure though, I might just stick to my corps land side. I hope you get some good ones this year 11B.

Hahha they are waaaay back in there. You wouldn’t wanna make the walk cause I hardly wanna make the walk lol. You do any good hunting that CORPS land? I’ve looked at it from a map but never looked into hunting it. I bet there’s even less pressure on that stuff.

Question: full disclosure, I've never hunted public land so I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I live pretty close to the Pat Mayse WMA. What's up with the compartments? Are you only aloud to be in one compartment a day? Or is it just for when you sign in to hunt for the day to state where you will be? I'm such a newbie and the websites often assume you already know this stuff

The compartments are for when they do the draw hunts. During archery season you can hunt anywhere you can find a spot. Theyíll close the WMA for 2 weekends to do the draw (rifle) hunts and this itís back to archery only. If you ever have any questions about Pat Mayse or hunting in general feel free to shoot me a PM

I haven't bagged a deer yet, I think there are good deer all around pat mayse. I had cameras with decent pictures and sat in both WMA and Corps land last year. Didn't bag one but I plan on getting one this year. I will have more time to hunt finally. I have heard some stories that Mayse in years past had some extremely nice bucks pulled off it. I think Cooper lake has a better gene pool and I really like it down there but seems pat mayse is less pressured so I plan on staying up here. Have any of you hunted the grass lands north of Bonham? My friend at work said he was driving through a couple years ago and got out and watched the largest buck of his life for a few minutes. Said he was HUGE and had Webbed antlers.
