Was out at LBJ for the first time yesterday got there at first light scouted a good bit of ground, back to prosper by 4. Found only one set of trail markers, which surprised me. Just expected to see more evidence of other hunters. All in all encouraged. Where do you hunt? (Not like exactly where, what unit?)

I had a hog run under my stand before shooting light this morning. I moved to a new spot this afternoon and had a doe, 3 fawns and a yearling buck come by at about 30 yards. I shot at the doe and missed. She was walking and I should have stopped her. Saw a young 6 pointer later in the evening too. I gave him a contact grunt and he stopped, then took off running. It was a good day besides the heat; I sweat my butt off. Hopefully I'll get some more opportunities. I'll be back at it next weekend!

He might not have seen any hunters but he very well could've ruined a hunt. We've all had "that guy" walk by during prime time, and he never saw us.

YEs, Glad I wasn't "that guy" ...Where I was there were no cars parked at the access or anywhere along the road... I got there early enough and waited long enough to be reasonably sure that I wasn't disturbing anyone...and it was a workday for most. Would not have considered doing that on a weekend...

What are you guys carrying in your LBJ hunting day packs? Ive been looking online at what other hunters carry in general in different places in the country but I'd like to know what the Texas public hunting folks carry so I don't miss anything regional specific.

A knife, some water, a piece of rope, flagging tape and a ball point pen. I strap a small stool to the pack. I hunt on the ground so some string comes in handy to tie back branches and weeds. If it looks like its going to rain I will add a poncho.

I'm heading out to the Clear Lake unit in the morning after I get the kids to school to do some fishing and a little hiking. Don't know where you were at or if I'd be much help because I'm new to hunting but if I can help let me know.

I got on doe monday morning. She went down within 20 yards fortunately it was a quartering towards shot that was as well exacuted as I could have hoped for. Went in the kneck and out just behind the shoulder on the other side. It passed thru her elbow braking the leg on the backside...

Went out today and hiked around a little. The south east entrance to Clear Lake was closed, one truck at the gate. Called the LBJ office and they said the pier had been vandalized so the road down was closed to vehicles until it is repaired. They said the other northern entrance was open. No cars anywhere when I got to the lake. I went looking for an old makeshift wood tree stand I saw the last time was out there and didn't mark in gps. Rabbit froze 6 foot in front of me no gun though. The lake was covered in too much growth to fish. Thats my report for today

Nice take XBOW STALKER! I have renewed faith in the quartering to shot!

First time hunting LBJ was yesterday...I got in a tree around 2:45 pm, had a doe on me in range before I was even ready. bummer. A Buck came into view about an hour later, but on my blind side (right). Big body, likely a 3-4 yr old deer...but his rack had barely a point on his right side, and a pretty thick antler on the left which had 3 points. Had to go back and re-read the antler restrictions, and am still not 100% whether I should take him if a next time comes around or wait for big poppa. Good luck to you. Again, fine take on public land!

As long as his one side or both is a spike it's a legal deer and I believe in wise county you can shoot 2 bucks

I might have a few critters I was interested in on one or two of those units... Do y'all know how these burns tend to impact the wildlife? Are we talking ruined for the season if they hit a unit late October?

Today is too hot, there is college football to be enjoyed, and my 11 yr old has a football game in Celina 3:30 - 5:30 pm.
Will be really glad to be in the tree before dawn to hunt the front. Hoping to have had some activity (since Wednesday) on camera to share. Good luck y'all. Should be interesting.

LBJ Savanna Restoration Project. I thought this was interesting reading.

Proposes pretty aggressive land management practices (mainly more prescribed burns and grazing, along with dozers) to remove scrub, thickets, and cedar. It seems the goal is to promote savanna/prairie-like habitat - namely, a mostly tall grass landscape with post oaks scattered about creating only 10% to 50% canopy coverage. Also proposes earthworks to restore streams to their original stream beds.

I guess he could say he's bird hunting but it seems pretty shady to me... This camera is setup about 300 yards behind my stand and he walked by this AM. I heard a shot that scared the crap out of me this AM. I assume it was him. Also had a guy walk right under my stand. Also saw 3 other guys. I've barely ever seen another hunter on this unit in 3 years. And I saw one doe but out of bow range. The winds were howling this AM. I hate hunting in high winds but the cooler temps are nice. I'll be back at it this afternoon. May be my last hunt at LBJ this year as I'll start hunting The Vine in a few weeks.

Could very well be a squirrel or rabbit hunter. I don't think he's trying to hide anything with orange on, like a poacher would. I'd be after the squirrels with these cooler temps . But alas, duty calls this weekend.

Hunted this AM. Saw 5 total deer. 2 unknown, a doe, and her two youngsters. Pulled my camera due to the controlled burn notice. Real bummer. Hung the camera on Wednesday. Not sure what that furball is bottom right of that one pic. Bobcat maybe?

Can I get a ruling on the larger buck? Looks too young and not a qualifier. What say you?

Mount it up about 10-12 feet in an area with little fuel. Keep it away from cedars and tall grass.

Not necessarily. I've witnessed deer coming back into burn units while still out patrolling fire lines. Seen it from the air also while setting fire from a helicopter.

I wouldn't let that RX burn notice change my hunting plans. The proposed burn units are more like a wish list. Weather conditions have to be just right. It takes a lot of coordination by the Fire Mgmt. Officer to pull off a Rx burn.
