I"m hoping a pop-up blind with 3 heaters and some sleeping bags will be enough to keep a 12 year old comfy enough to stay at the hunt.

Good luck out there.

Went out this afternoon and saw some does at 240 yards. She tried to get a steady shot but wife was too cold. Tried to stalk and get closer but we were too loud with all the leaves on the ground. We know where they are and will capitalize on it in the morning. We will have buddy heater in the blind with us tomorrow.
Any other reports?

Up in Unit 7 from noon yesterday until noon today, and have seen a total of 1 coyote. I think I drew the "dead zone".

We hit it hard, especially Saturday. In unit 8, 20 (ish) degrees. Did not see even one deer. My 12 yo was one tough cookie and never complained about the cold. It's always good to be out with my son in the wild but we were a bit disappointed with the results. The threat of sleet sent us home early today. Back in Houston now.

at the top of unit 7. saw two small does at last light the first day but didnt get a shot. saw a nice buck yesterday but my hunting buddy spooked him by slamming the window on the blind up too fast. shot a hog a little while later and got my buck tag. waiting on big boy to show back up today.

Did anybody have any luck this weekend? I hunted unit 1 with my brother. Of course I saw a nice 8 point buck on Saturday while still hunting a drainage. He was only 40 yards from me. If only I had a buck tag. I also saw a spike buck in the evening. He walked in behind me at 15 yards. I heard something and turned my head to see him looking right at me through the grass. He got spooked and left before I could get my rifle up.

I was up in 7-G and saw one lonely coyote still hunting on Friday afternoon. I sat on a game trail for 6 hours on Saturday and did not see anything and gave up. Not sure I will apply again next year, although I liked being out in the boonies. 2.5 days to scout and hunt a big area is a bit much to ask for and make it worth the $60. Hopefully some others were successful. If not, and they are serious about reducing the herd, they need to think about making some changes if they want people to kill animals. Maybe they just want to report they provided X # of hunter days to the public. Although in orientation, they did report a pretty small deer population, and close to their goal.

Realized I never posted a photo of my doe. Shot late on Friday (just before the big storm hit), recovered early Sat AM. Notice the ice on the trees. This is the non-driving road along the south-east border of Unit 1.

Yep, more grey than blue. I kept waiting for you guys not to be in that blind, so I could take it over, but you stuck it out. I like that you could see from up there. I wanted to hunt the other end of that clearing, but the brush was too high to me able to see any decent size of area.

Did you guys stay there to shoot your doe and pig or were you in other spots?

Congrats on the doe and nice drag device. The rocks where I was would have shredded your tarp though.

I was allowed out earlier to put up my stand, but could not hunt until noon. I stopped in the office and asked them and they said that since you could scout the day before, that this was OK. You need to attend orientation though. I did it the first weekend when scouting was allowed.

Yeah, I've already done the orientation and was planning on setting up a stand on Thursday during the scouting day. Just wasn't sure if you could hunt all day Friday or if you had to wait to noon.

yes, we sat all day saturday and sunday (with the help of a buddy heater). we went in thursday to set up a tripod and found that enormous blind there. wasnt there a month ago when we scouted. called the office to ask about it and Rob Iski said "Merry Christmas". if it wasnt for that blind we would have not hunted, at least saturday. that cold with the wind was BRUTAL! we got both animals from the blind.

We drew A and F (even though we applied together), and were told we could hunt together in either area.

Where's that blind at? I've spent more time up in A during scouting season than I have F. I never saw a blind near F though.

Thanks,

Me and 2 buddies got to unit 2 around 1:30 this afternoon. The guy hunting blind 3 on unit 2 saw a small buck but could not get a shot off. Drizzled most of the day then cleared up for about 30 minutes, then the thick fog came about 5:00pm. Back at it early a.m. On a side note we are staying at the Rio Bonito rv park in a cabin, very nice and clean. About 15 miles from our unit. I would definitely stay here again. I will try to post again tomorrow evening.

Brizendine's is good, and very inexpensive. Rumor has it you don't get your whole deer back. I don't think that is true, but it would be believable that they are a little sloppy with their cuts, so maybe...but I keep going back. Every other place around I have checked is so expensive that I would happily donate a little meat.

Also, I hunted unit 13 this weekend. I saw one for horned yearling buck, three times. That was all I saw. It is not a spot for bow hunting though, as you are required to use their blind, and it overlooks a large field. I didn't scout, since you aren't allowed to hunt anywhere but their blind anyway. I had the road directly in front of me about 125 yards away with constant traffic, and the knowledge that my unit had 110 acres of prime habitat behind me that I could not see, or hunt. Bummer. I may go back, but it WILL NOT be unit 13.

Viper I will upload in the next day or so. Tried to do it just now but apparently I can not just copy from iPad and post, I need to signup for Flickr or another site where I can get a URL. That is unless y'all know any tricks or tell me an easier way to do it!

Got there Friday night and set up my blinds so I could just go straight in Saturday and hunt. Heard nothing, woods were silent. Thought maybe it was the drop in temps coming Sunday or maybe the rut being over? It was so eerily quiet, I didn't see anything. I could hear ATVs and hammering/shooting constantly west of me. Almost sounded like construction it was happening so much, or a gun range. I hunted all day Saturday didn't hear a peep, and didn't stay for the Sunday temp drop.
